(1-Rework Procedure)

Rework Procedure

A. CYLINDER REMOVAL

1. Position machine on a level surface.

2. Install steering pivot lock pin.

3. To gain access to the steering cylinders, tilt the cab or operators platform. See machines O&M Manual for instructions.

4. Remove and cap or plug all hydraulic fittings and hoses to the steering cylinders.

NOTE: Identify all hydraulic lines as they are removed for reinstallation purposes.

5. Remove cylinder mounting pins and cylinders.

B. DISASSEMBLY OF CYLINDER (Ref Dwg 1197219)

1. Unscrew Nut, 1258155, from Ring, 1258156 and push ring into cylinder bore.

2. Insert punch into hole in cylinder wall and compress the Snap Ring 1258154. Remove the snap ring from groove in cylinder wall.

3. Slowly slide out rod and piston assembly.

4. Unscrew piston retention nut from rod end and remove piston, ring and ring nut.

C. CYLINDER REWORK PROCEDURE

1. Hold the ring, part no. 1258156, in a vise and drill two holes 6.2 dia X 7 mm deep X 60 mm apart into the threaded end. See 1258156 Ring Illustration.

2. Hold the nut, part no. 1258155, in a vise. Drill and tap two M8 x 1.25-6H thread holes in the side, 90 degrees apart. See 125-8155 Nut Illustration.

NOTE: Protect the ring and nut from damage by the use of brass vise jaw covers or similar device.

D. CYLINDER REASSEMBLY PROCEDURE

1. Install new seals from seal kit onto the piston and ring.

2. Put a thin coat of clean oil on the o-ring seals, back-up rings and lip seal. Insert ring nut, ring and piston onto cylinder rod. Torque the piston retention nut to 362 N·m (268 lb ft).

3. Carefully insert the piston and rod assembly and ring into the cylinder bore.

4. Install snap ring into groove of cylinder wall.

5. Pull piston rod out until ring is in contact with snap ring.

6. Screw ring nut onto the ring and tighten hand tight.

7. Hold the ring in place with the use of an adjustable face spanner wrench inserted into the two new 6.2 dia holes. Tighten the ring nut with an adjustable pin spanner wrench to 400 N·m (296 lb ft).

8. After tightening, insert the two brass washers and set screws, from the seal kit, into the new tapped holes in the ring nut. Tighten the set screws until the washers are seated into the ring threads.

NOTE: Reinstall the cylinder by reversing the removal steps.
