NOTE: This Program can be administered either before or after a failure. In either case the decision whether to apply the Program is made by the dealer. When reporting the repair, use "PS8970" as the Part Number and "7755" as the Group Number. If administered before failure, use "56" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and use "T" as the SIMS Description Code. If administered after failure, use "96" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and use "Z" as the SIMS Description Code.

NOTE: This Revised Service Letter replaces the April 16, 1997 Service Letter. Changes have been made to the Rework Procedure.

NOTE: Any dealer that has already installed the 1445329 Kit should not apply this revision. Service Engineering has been handling the dealers who have already purchased the Kit on an individual basis.

Problem

A higher pitched fan that provides improved cooling capability needs to be installed on certain 834B and 836 Compactors. This kit provides the Parts Needed to update the current field population to install the enhanced design.

NOTE: This fan will require an additional 11 horsepower to operate. It is recommended that PS8971 be administered in conjunction with this program.

Rework Procedure

(From Fan Group - Suction 2Q2859)

1. Remove 4 - 7N2345 Fan Guard Assemblies, 8 - 5S7379 Bolts (-16 22.22 Long), 8 - 8T4896 Washers and 12 - 7V6064 Bolt Assemblies. Save these parts for reuse later.

2. Remove and discard spider assembly, adapter and hardware.

3. Remove V-belt set and discard.

4. From the fan drive group, remove and save the 7N3629 Adapter for reuse later. Remove and discard the pulley, bearings, spacer, and hardware. Save the 9F4446 Seal for reuse later.

5. Remove Belt Tightener Group. Save 2S6160 Washer, 5M3062 Bolt and 1S8687 Spacer for reuse later.

6. From the fan drive group, remove and save the 6N5675 Tube Assembly, 9S7720 Elbow, 7D1728 Clip, 1 - 9B7237 Bolt (-16 31.75 mm long) and 1 - 8T4896 Washer for reuse later.

7. From the Fan Drive Group, remove 3 bolts and 3 - 8T4223 Washers from the bracket assembly. Save the 8T4223 Washers for reuse later.

8. From the Pulley Group, remove Pulley and 4 Bolts from the damper on crankshaft and discard.

9. From the damper group, remove 6 bolts from the damper adapter on the crankshaft and discard. Remove and discard the damper assembly and the damper adapter.

10. Install 6N6037 Damper Adapter using 8 - 2D6374 Bolts (-18 171.45 mm long). Tighten to a torque of 135 N·m. See Illustration 1.

11. Install 7C6699 Damper Assembly using 1 - 6N7654 Spacer and 12 - 0S1585 Bolts (-13 38.1 mm long). Tighten to a torque of 105 N·m.

12. Install 6N6459 Pulley, 1495474 Pulley using 4 - 0S1573 Bolts (-13 101.6 mm long). Tighten to a torque of 105 N·m. See Illustration 2.

13. Install 149-3939 Bracket Assembly with 3 - 8T4223 Washer (from Step 7) and 3 - 8T4835 Bolts (-13 50.8 mm long). Tighten to a torque of 105 N·m.

14. Install the 9S7720 Elbow into bracket assembly.

15. Reinstall the 6N5675 Tube Assembly.

16. Secure the tube assembly with 7D1728 Clip using 1 - 8T4896 Washer and 1 - 9B7237 Bolt. Tighten to 47 N·m.

17. Install 5M6214 Pipe Plug and 3B8485 Fitting on 1426278 Arm Assembly.

NOTE: Install the pipe plug in the right side of the idler arm assembly.

18. Assemble the arm subassembly (from Step 17) to the bracket assembly (from Step 13) with 2M2742 Retaining Plate, 8T4896 Washer and 5S7379 Bolt (-16 22.22 mm long). Tighten to 47 N·m. See Illustration 3.

19. Install 5M9735 Seal, 6B1124 Bearing and 8B2327 Retaining Ring in the 1426280 Pulley. See Illustration 4.

NOTE: The cavity between bearings in the arm assembly is to be filled with Multipurpose No. 2 Lithium grease at assembly.

20. Slide the pulley subassembly (from Step 19), 1S8687 Spacer (from Step 5) and the remaining 6B1124 Bearing onto the arm assembly (from Step 18) and secure with 2S6160 Hard Washer and 5M3062 Bolt (-16 19.05 mm long). Tighten to 47 N·m.

NOTE: Lubricate the lip of the seal lightly with grease before assembly.

21. Attach 2S6150 Cover and 2S6151 Gasket to the pulley using 4 - 0S1618 Bolts (-18 25.4 mm long). Tighten to 25 N·m.

22. Attach one end of 1357876 Spring Assembly to arm assembly using 1 - 6S6308 Pin and 1 - 3B4617 Cotter Pin. See Illustration 5.

23. Slide 7I1334 Hose over spring assembly.

24. Attach the other end of spring assembly to 1426281 Spring Retainer using 1 - 6S6308 Pin and 1 - 3B4617 Cotter Pin.

25. Secure spring retainer to bracket assembly (from Step 13) using 8T4223 Washer and 6V8188 Nut. Tighten nut to 105 N·m.

26. Install 5P9439 Bearing and 7H7107 Lip Seal into 1446674 Hub. See Illustration 6.

NOTE: See Illustration 7 for correct orientation of seal.

27. Slide hub subassembly (from Step 26), 1493915 Sleeve, 1443921 Spacer and 1448130 Bearing onto the shaft of the bracket assembly.

NOTE: The cavity between bearings in the arm assembly is to be filled with Multipurpose No. 2 Lithium grease at assembly.

28. Secure the hub subassembly (from Step 27) to shaft using 1447917 Retaining Washer and 2 - 5P7979 Bolts (-24 57.15 mm long). Tighten to 25 N·m. See Illustration 6.

29. Install 1426276 Pulley, 9F4446 O-Ring Seal and 7N3629 Adapter to hub assembly. Secure with 6 - 0T0573 Bolts (-16 69.85 Long) and 6 - 9S8752 Nuts. Tighten to 47 N·m. See Illustration 8.

30. Install 6N1551 V-Belt Set.

31. Install 1422388 Fan, 1340967 Adapter and secure with 6 - 8T4223 Washers and 6 - 8T8920 Bolts (-13 82.55 Long). Tighten to 105 N·m. See Illustration 9.

32. Reinstall 7N2345 Fan Guards using 8 - 8T4896 Washers, 8 - 5S7379 Bolts and 12 - 7V6064 Bolts. Tighten to 47 N·m.

33. From the Radiator Group, remove the 6N1608 Hump Hose from the inlet to the water pump and replace with 203 mm (8 inches) of 5P0764 Bulk Hose (not included in kit).
