Steering Cylinder - Assemble

Usage:

Assembly Procedure

NOTE: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.

1. Install the seal assemblies on relief valve (14) in their original positions. Install relief valve (14) in cylinder body (3). Tighten the relief valve to a torque of 62.5 ± 2.5 N·m (46 ± 2 lb ft)

2. Use Tooling (A) to install bearings (2) and (12) in cylinder body (3) and rod assembly (11). Make sure that the bearings are centered in the bores.

3. Apply 7M-7456 Compound to the bores for lip seals (1) and (13). Use Tooling (B) to install lip seals (1) and (13) on either side of bearings (2) and (12). Make sure that the sealing lips are facing outward.

4. Install wear ring (15), seal assembly (16), U-cup seal (17) and lip seal (18) in head (9). Use Tooling (B) to install the lip seal. Install the seal with the lip facing toward the rod end of the cylinder. Apply a thin coat of clean hydraulic oil on the seals and on the wear ring.

5. Install three bolts (19) and the washers in head (9).

6. Install the O-ring seal and backup ring (8) on head (9).

7. Put Tooling (C) in position on the rod assembly. Install head (9) on rod assembly (11).

8. Install seal assembly (6) and wear ring (5) on piston (7).

9. Install piston (7) on rod assembly (11).

10. Apply clean hydraulic oil to the threads of nut (4) and install the nut on rod assembly (11). Use Tooling (D) to tighten the nut to a torque of 2180 ± 220 N·m (1600 ± 160 lb ft).

11. Use Tooling (E) to install rod assembly (11) in cylinder body (3). Install bolts (10) and the washers that hold head (9) to cylinder body (3). Tighten bolts (10) with the rod fully extended.

12. Remove the steering cylinder from Tooling (E). The weight of the steering cylinder is 90 kg (198 lb).

End By:

a. Install the steering cylinder. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Cylinder - Install" for the machine that is being serviced.
