PROBLEM

The Navigator Display may experience a crack in the glass. A limited number of displays were manufactured with glass that did not meet Caterpillar specifications. In the event of a breakage, glass meeting the Caterpillar specification is designed to break into small shards of glass fragments. Displays identified in this service letter could break into larger chards of glass. A protective glass film has been developed to reduce the possibility of injury from broken glass. This broken glass may, in conjunction with other factors or circumstances, result in a risk of personal injury or death.

ACTION REQUIRED

The S/N of the display must be in the claim or it will be declined.

Navigator Instructions for installing Protective Film to the Glass

Parts Needed:
357-0712 Protective Film

Tools Needed:
Small Squeegee
Clean Water
Optional Wetting Solution (baby shampoo & water)
Glass Cleaner
Paper Towels
Spray Bottle

1. Remove the Navigator from the machine bracket.

2. Find a suitable place to perform this procedure. Choose a place with good illumination for removing the bubbles and low wind to reduce the chance of getting contamination under the film.

3. Thoroughly clean the display glass and surrounding area using glass cleaner and paper towels. After cleaning, check the glass to ensure it does not have any dirt or foreign objects on it.

4. Wipe clean and dry with paper towels.

5. The self-adhesive film comes with a clear protective liner over the self-adhesive. Place film on a clean flat work surface with liner facing up. Remove liner and expose self-adhesive. If liner does not remove easily, separate by firmly pressing a small piece of masking tape to both sides of one corner of the film and pull adhesive side of film from itself as it may stick together.

6. Thoroughly spray the exposed self-adhesive with wetting solution. Make sure the entire surface is dripping wet. (Wetting solution can be replaced with clean water or water with a couple drops of baby shampoo added to it. The baby shampoo will allow the film to slide more easily)

7. Generously spray the glass in a horizontal motion until it is completely covered with the wetting solution.

8. While glass is still wet, separate the film using the attached paper square. Position the adhesive side of the film against glass. If film does not slide smoothly on the glass, lift film and apply more wetting solution for additional slip.

9. Spray film (now on glass) with wetting solution. Squeegee in a horizontal direction from one side to the other starting at the top of the film and working toward the bottom in order to remove any air bubbles and excess wetting solution.

NOTE: Film may appear hazy until excess wetting solution evaporates.

10. Attach Navigator to the Machine bracket.
