Connecting Rod Bolt Replacement Procedure On Certain C13 Industrial Engines {1218, 1225}
- Industrial Engine
- C13 (S/N: KWJ1-UP)
Introduction
Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read the information and you understand the information.
Installation Procedure
- In the field the machine can be moved onto a platform, or parked over a ditch if available. This will make the rework easier.

(B) Front pad200 mm (7.9 inch) - If not applicable, wood pads (A) and (B) must be placed under the front instruments and middle of the chassis to raise and brake the machine as shown in the illustrations above.
- The machine articulation should be disabled/locked out by using the turning prevent bar.

Note: For safety, let the engine cool down to
50° C (122° F) before performing the rework.Show/hide tableIllustration 4 g06095265 (1) Cable straps

Illustration 8 g06095313 (10) Connecting rod bolts - Replace connecting rod bolts (10). Follow the procedure below for the replacement of the connecting rod bolts.
Note: Do not remove the connecting rod cap at any point of this rework procedure. Removal of the rod cap could disturb the connecting rod to connecting rod cap joint.
- Remove the bolt on the tab side of the connecting rod and replace it with a new connecting rod bolt.
- Tighten the bolt to
130 ± 7 N·m (96 ± 5 lb ft) . - Remove and replace the other bolt in the connecting rod cap. Tighten the second bolt to
130 ± 7 N·m (96 ± 5 lb ft) . - Turn the first bolt an extra 60° ± 5°. Then turn the second bolt an extra 60° ± 5°.
- Repeat this process for each additional set of connecting rods until all connecting rod bolts have been replaced.

- Perform the final inspection of verification of the repair.
- Refill the engine with new engine oil.
- Perform an inspection of the machine and engine before starting the machine.
- Start the engine and run it at low idle. Perform another visual inspection.
- Elevate the engine speed to raise the engine oil to operating temperature level.
- Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to check for any codes. If codes are present, resolve any codes before continuing. Download the k"Product Status Report".
- Ensure that there are no engine oil leaks coming from the engine. If there are no leaks present, return the machine to service.
