NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Drain the engine oil from the oil temperature regulator housing. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Oil - Change" for the correct draining procedure.

  2. Disconnect sending unit (4) from the cover if a sending unit is installed.

  3. Remove the bolts that hold cover (2) to oil temperature regulator housing (1).

  4. Remove cover (2) and tube (3).

    Note: It is not necessary to remove oil temperature regulator housing (1) from the engine in order to remove oil temperature regulators (5).

  5. Remove the gasket and oil temperature regulators (5) from oil temperature regulator housing (1).

  6. Remove the lip seals from oil temperature regulator housing (1).

Installation Procedure

  1. Use Tooling (A) in order to install the lip seals in oil temperature regulator housing (1) with the lip of the seal away from cover (2).

  2. Install oil temperature regulators (5) in oil temperature regulator housing (1).

  3. Install new O-ring seals on tube (3). Apply clean engine oil to the O-ring seals.

  4. Place tube (3), cover (2), and the gasket in position on oil temperature regulator housing (1). Install the bolts that hold tube (3), cover (2), and the gasket in position.

  5. Connect sending unit (4) to the cover.

  6. Fill the engine with oil to the correct level. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Oil - Change" for the correct filling procedure.
