Procedure to Update the Open Crankcase Ventilation System on C13 and C15 Engines{1074, 1120, 1317} Caterpillar

Engine:

C13 (S/N: LEE1-UP)

C15 (S/N: SDP1-UP)

Introduction

The updated Open Crankcase Ventilation system (OCV) reduces oil emulsions during low load conditions at moderate ambient temperatures. The updated (OCV) system increases the temperature of the gases that enter the filter of the (OCV) system. This is accomplished by replacing the aluminum parts of the breather with nonmetallic parts and by insulating the hose from the breather to the canister. The updated (OCV) system contains a revised canister that separates the condensed water from the oil. Only the oil returns back to the engine. The new installed hardware prevents premature tripping of the pressure sensor that measures the pressure of the crankcase ventilation. Some oil emulsion on the oil fill neck is acceptable. Oil emulsion may be present on the inner top surfaces of the valve cover in low load, moderately cool weather conditions. Some oil emulsion is acceptable.

Note: The new (OCV) systems are adaptable back to the first production of the listed machines. The change is effective at the factory with the engine serial numbers S/N:LEE22319-UP and ; S/N:SDP22046-UP.

Removal of Components

1. Remove the ventilation hose of the (OCV) system.

2. Remove the open crankcase ventilation fumes disposal filter.

3. Remove the mounting bracket for the fumes disposal filter .

4. Remove the breather assembly.

5. Reuse all undamaged parts that are not listed in the "Required Parts" section of Table 1.

1. Attach the 313-5867 Filter Bracket (17) to the engine.

2. Install the new 328-8880 Fumes Disposal Filter Gp (6) into the 313-5867 Filter Bracket (17) .

3. Install the four 9M-1974 Hard Washers (14), the two 9X-2099 Studs (15), and the two 6V-2317 Bolts (16) .

4. Refer to Illustration 7.

Note: Take care to not damage the insulation on the 329-9505 Hose As .

With the two 6G-5608 Clamps (19) on the 329-9505 Hose As (4), attach the Hose As (4) to the 328-6926 Adapter As (1) and the Fumes Disposal Filter Gp (6). Move the two Clamps (19) to the proper location on the Hose As (4). Tighten the clamps to the proper torque. Refer to Illustration 8.

If this hose is not available in an earlier kit, modify the existing 297-5386 Hose (18) by cutting off the top vertical section. Refer to Illustration 10. The remaining section of hose will have a smaller diameter than the lip of the hose adapter on the fumes disposal filter. In order to fit, the hose must be stretched over the lip of the hose adapter on the fumes disposal filter with the aid of any clean grease.

1. Slip the 8T-1117 Hose Clamp (23) onto the 297-5386 Hose (18) .

2. Push the Hose (18) onto the lip of the hose adapter on the 328-8880 Fumes Disposal Filter Gp (6) .

3. Tighten the clamp to the correct torque.

4. Refer to Illustration 9.

Oil Drain Hose and Tubing

Since the new 328-8880 Fumes Disposal Filter Gp (6) is longer, the oil drain hose will have a dip prior to connecting to the steel tubing.

1. Eliminate the dip by cutting off the top section of the 311-6495 Tube As (22) .

2. Attach the 334-1073 Clamp (24) and the large end of the 332-4706 Hose (20) to the bottom of the 328-8880 Fumes Disposal Filter Gp (6) .

3. Tighten the clamp to the proper torque.

4. Remove the 300-9952 Check Valve As (25) from the 311-6495 Tube As (22) .

5. Replace the old check valve assembly with a new 300-9952 Check Valve As (25) .

6. Tighten the fittings to the correct torque.

7. Attach the 5V-9155 Hose Clamp (21) and the small end of 332-4706 Hose (20) to the remaining section of the 311-6495 Tube As (22) .

8. Attach the 5V-9155 Hose Clamp (21) and the small end of 332-4706 Hose (20) to the remaining section of the 311-6495 Tube As (22) .

9. Tighten the clamp to the proper torque.

10. Refer to Illustration 8.

1. Install the components of the breather assembly (4) and the adapter assembly (1). Refer to Illustration 11. Tighten bolts 1 through 8 in the sequence that is shown in Illustration 13.

2. Install the pressure sensor (8) onto the breather assembly (4) .

1. Attach the 332-7233 Filter Bracket (12) to the engine with the three 6V-4249 Bolts (13) and the three 6V-5839 Washers (14). Refer to Illustration 14.

2. Install the new 333-7508 Fumes Disposal Filter Gp (17) into the 313-5867 Filter Bracket (12). Mount the fumes disposal filter with the 6V-2317 Bolts (15) and the 9M-1974 Hard Washers (16) .

3. Refer to Illustration 15.

Note: Take care to not damage the insulation on the 330-8178 Hose As .

With the two 6G-5608 Clamps (19) on the 330-8178 Hose As (18), attach the Hose As (18) to the 328-9982 Adapter As (1) and the Fumes Disposal Filter Gp (17). Move the two Clamps (19) to the proper location on the Hose As (18). Tighten the clamps to the proper torque. Refer to Illustration 16.

1. Cut the 302-7347 Hose (20) in order to fit the hose to the engine. The remaining section of hose will have a smaller diameter than the lip of the hose adapter on the fumes disposal filter. In order to fit, the hose must be stretched over the lip of the hose adapter on the fumes disposal filter with the aid of any clean grease.

2. Slip the 8T-1117 Hose Clamp (24) onto the 302-7347 Hose (20) .

   Note: Use an oil resistant liner with the 302-7347 Hose (20) .

3. Push Hose (20) onto the lip of the hose adapter on the 333-7508 Fumes Disposal Filter Gp (17) .

4. Tighten the clamp to the correct torque.

5. Refer to Illustration 17.

Oil Drain Hose and Tubing

1. Attach the 334-1073 Clamp (25) and the large end of the 333-0126 Hose (21) to the bottom of the 333-7508 Fumes Disposal Filter Gp (17) .

2. Tighten the clamp to the proper torque.

3. Attach the 144-9973 Clamp (22) and the small end of 333-0126 Hose (21) to the remaining section of the 311-6495 Tube As (23) .

4. Tighten the clamp to the proper torque.

5. Remove the old 300-9952 Check Valve As (26) from the 311-6495 Tube As (23) .

6. Replace the old check valve assembly with a new 300-9952 Check Valve As (26) .

7. Tighten the fittings to the correct torque.

8. Refer to Illustration 17.

With the two 6G-5608 Clamps (21) on the 332-9278 Hose As (4), attach the Hose As (4) to the 328-6926 Adapter As (1) and the Fumes Disposal Filter Gp (6). Move the two Clamps (21) to the proper location on the Hose As (4). Tighten the clamps to the proper torque. Refer to Illustration 25.

Fumes Disposal Hose

1. Slip the 8T-1117 Hose Clamp (22) onto the 332-9281 Hose (23) .

2. Push the Hose (23) onto the lip of the hose adapter on the 328-8880 Fumes Disposal Filter Gp (6) .

3. Tighten the 8T-1117 Hose Clamp (22) to the correct torque.

4. Refer to Illustration 25.

5. Remove the 300-9952 Check Valve As (33) from the 333-6478 Tube As (30) .

6. Replace the old check valve assembly with a new 300-9952 Check Valve As (33) .

7. Mount the 5P-9297 Clip (28) on the 333-6478 Tube As (30). Assemble the clip (28) to the engine block with the 6V-5842 Bolt (27), the 6V-5839 Washer (17), and the 144-8344 Spacer (29) .

8. Mount the 124-9633 Clip (31) on the 333-6478 Tube As (30). Assemble the clip (31) to the engine block with the 101-3129 Stud (32) and the 6V-5839 Washer (17) .

9. Tighten the fittings to the correct torque.

10. Refer to Illustration 26.
