Improved Turbocharger Oil Drain Elbows{1307,1052}

Usage:

3516 Engines

Description of Change: There have been reports of oil leakage from the turbocharger oil drain lines on some 3516 Engines. The oil leakage can be caused by cracked or damaged oil drain tubes which result from misalignment of the turbocharger oil drain tubes, adapters and elbows. See Illustration 1. The two turbocharger oil drain elbows have been improved on the 3516 Engines. These elbows have a larger bore which will allow better alignment of the oil drain tubes.

Adaptable As: The part numbers of the improved turbocharger oil drain elbows [1W5542 (RH), 1W5543 (LH)] have not changed. The improved oil drain elbows are in effect as shown in the chart.

If an engine has a problem with oil drain tube leakage, the tubes should be inspected for cracks or worn spots, and replaced if needed. On earlier engines, the turbocharger oil drain elbows can be replaced or machined to the larger diameter. This larger diameter is 40.55 ± 0.08 mm (1.596 ± .003"). If the elbows are machined, they must have a 30° chamfer on the bores. This chamfer has an outside diameter of 43.8 ± 0.5 mm (1.72 ± .02"). See Illustration 2.
