Timing Gear Cover - Remove and Install

Start By:
- Remove the engine support. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Support - Remove and Install" for the engine that is being serviced.
- Remove the water pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Water Pump - Remove" for the engine that is being serviced.
- Remove the governor drive. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Governor Drive - Remove" for the engine that is being serviced.
- Remove the auxiliary water pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Auxiliary Water Pump - Remove" for the engine that is being serviced.
- Remove the vibration damper and pulley. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Vibration Damper and Pulley - Remove" for the engine that is being serviced.

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
- Remove seven bolts (2) that hold the oil pan to the timing gear cover.
- Loosen bolts (1) that hold the oil pan and plate to the cylinder block.
- Fasten a suitable lifting device and lifting chain to the engine and carefully lift the front of the engine.

Illustration 2 g00988765 - Install two shims (3) between the oil pan plate (4) and the cylinder block on both sides of the engine.
Note: Do not cause damage to the oil pan and oil pan plate gaskets.
- Remove the bolts and nuts that hold the timing gear cover to the front of the engine.

Illustration 3 g00988767 - Install two 3/8 inch - 16 NC guide bolts (6) in the front of the cylinder block, as shown.
- Install Tooling (A) on timing gear cover (5), as shown.
- Fasten a suitable lifting device and lifting chain to Tooling (A). Move the timing gear cover away from the front of the cylinder block. The weight of the timing gear cover is approximately
25 kg (55 lb) . - Place the timing gear cover on the ground and remove the hoist.
- Remove Tooling (A).

- Place a new gasket in position on timing gear cover (1).
- Install two 3/8"-16 NC guide bolts (2) in the cylinder block, as shown.

Illustration 5 g00988809 - Install Tooling (A) on timing gear cover (1). Apply a small amount of clean engine oil on the lip of the seal in timing gear cover (1).
- Fasten a suitable lifting device and lifting chains to Tooling (A), as shown. Place timing gear cover (1) in position over guide bolts (2) and the dowels.
- Install the bolts and nuts that hold timing gear cover (1) to the cylinder block.
- Remove the lifting device, Tooling (A), and guide bolts (2).

Illustration 6 g00988803 - Tighten bolts (3) and (4) to a torque of
23 ± 4 N·m (17 ± 3 lb ft) . - Fasten a suitable lifting device and lifting chains to the engine and carefully lift the front of the engine. Remove the shims between the oil pan plate and the cylinder block.

- Install seven bolts (6) that hold the oil pan to the timing gear cover.

- Install the vibration damper and pulley. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Vibration Damper and Pulley - Install" for the engine that is being serviced.
- Install the auxiliary water pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Auxiliary Water Pump - Install" for the engine that is being serviced.
- Install the governor drive. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Governor Drive - Install" for the engine that is being serviced.
- Install the water pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Water Pump - Install" for the engine that is being serviced.
- Install the engine support. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Support - Remove and Install" for the engine that is being serviced.
