Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
- Drain the coolant from the cooling system into a suitable container for storage or disposal.
Note: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities" for the coolant capacity of the engine.
Show/hide tableIllustration 1 g00940763 - Loosen the clamps and remove hose (5) from the water pump inlet.
- Remove bolts (1) from the back side of the front housing. Remove bolts (3) that fasten the water pump to the front housing.
- Tap water pump (2) with a soft hammer in order to loosen the water pump.
- Remove water pump (2). Remove gasket (4) from the front housing and the water pump.

- Inspect the drive gear for the water pump for wear or other damage. If necessary, replace the drive gear.
Note: Do Not use sealant on the gasket for the water pump.
- Clean the joint faces of the water pump and the front housing. Install gasket (4) on the water pump.
- Install water pump (3) on the front housing.
Note: New bolts have sealant to the first
13 mm (0.5 inch) of the threads. In order to reuse the old bolts, clean the old sealant from the bolts and apply Tooling (A) to the bolts. - Install bolts (2) that fasten the water pump to the front housing. Install bolts (1) on the back side of the front housing.
- Install hose (5) to the water pump inlet. Tighten the hose clamps.
- Fill the cooling system with coolant. Refer to Operation and Maintenance, "Refill Capabilities" for the cooling system capacity of the engine.
