Installation Procedure

1. Clean all mating surfaces thoroughly.

2. Ensure that the gasket for the engine oil pan is not damaged. If the gasket for the engine oil pan is damaged, remove the engine oil pan. Install a new gasket.

3. Ensure that thrust washer (4) is aligned with hollow dowel (6).

4. Position idler gear hub (8) and install bolts (9) to locate the idler gear hub. Tighten the bolts to seat the idler gear hub.

   Note: The Lubrication Hole (X) of the idler gear hub must be positioned at the top of the idler gear hub.

5. Install gasket (3) and front housing (1) on the cylinder block. Cut the gasket to the correct length, if necessary. Apply Tooling (A) to the bottom portion of the gasket.

   Note: If a new front housing is installed, remove the three studs from the old front housing. Clean the threads of the studs. Apply Tooling (B) to the threads of the studs. Install the studs in the new front housing. Tighten the studs to a torque of 11 N·m (97 lb in).

6. Position the front housing on the cylinder block. Install four bolts (7), around the idler gear hub. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 22 N·m (16 lb ft).

   Note: Ensure that the bottom of the front cover is aligned with the bottom of the cylinder block before the bolts are tightened. The alignment of the bottom face of the front cover and the bottom of the cylinder block must not exceed 0.00 ± 0.10 mm (0.000 ± 0.004 inch).

7. Install remaining bolts (2) that fasten the front housing to the cylinder block. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 22 N·m (16 lb ft).

End By:

1. Install the air compressor, if equipped.

2. Install the fuel injection pump.

3. Install the camshaft gear.

4. Install the front gear group.

5. Install the front cover.

6. Install the engine oil pan.
