Water Temperature Regulator - Remove and Install

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Drain the coolant from the cooling system to a level below the water temperature regulator into a suitable container for storage or disposal.
Loosen the hose clamp from the upper radiator hose and remove the upper radiator hose from the water temperature regulator housing.

Remove bolts (1) that hold water temperature regulator housing (3) in position on the water outlet manifold. Remove the water temperature regulator housing and remove seal (4).
If necessary, remove plug (2) from the water temperature regulator housing.
Press tab (A) of collar (7) away from the groove in the water temperature regulator housing (3). Remove the collar from the water temperature regulator housing. Remove water temperature regulator (6) from the water temperature regulator housing. Remove O-ring seal (5) from the water temperature regulator. Note the position of the water temperature regulator in the water temperature regulator housing for installation.
Refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, "Water Temperature Regulator - Test" for the correct procedure on testing the water temperature regulator.

Install water temperature regulator (6) and O-ring seal (5) into water temperature regulator housing (3). Make sure that water temperature regulator (6) is installed in the original position.
Note: Tab (A) of collar (7) must be inserted in the groove of the water temperature regulator housing in order to secure the water temperature regulator during engine operation.
Install collar (7) in order to secure water temperature regulator (6) in the water temperature regulator housing .
Install seal (4) in water temperature regulator housing (3). Position the water temperature regulator housing on the water outlet manifold.
Install bolts (1) that fasten water temperature regulator housing (3) to the water outlet manifold. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 22 N·m (16 lb ft).
If necessary, install plug (2) and tighten to a torque of 30 N·m (22).
Install the upper radiator hose.
Fill the cooling system to the proper level.
