Engine Oil Filter Base - Disassemble

Usage:

3196 2XR

Disassembly Procedure

Start By:

  1. Remove the engine oil filter base.


NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Remove three O-ring seals (6) from the oil filter base.

  1. Remove relief valve assembly:

    1. Loosen bolt (1) slowly in order to release the compression on the spring (3) .

    1. Remove the following items from the oil filter base: bolt (1), seat of the relief valve spring (2), spring (3) and retainer (4) .

    1. Remove spacer (5) from bolt (1) .

  1. Remove the two bolts and the washers that hold valve (11).

  1. Remove valve (11) and O-ring seal (9) from oil filter base.

  1. Remove the two bolts and the washers that hold cover (10) .

  1. Remove the following items from the oil filter base: cover (10), O-ring seal (9), spring (8) and oil pump bypass valve (7) .

  1. Remove the following items from oil filter base: cover (12), O-ring seal (13), spring (14) and relief valve plunger (15) .

  1. Remove the stud that holds the oil filter to the oil filter base, if necessary.
