  1. Remove the bucket. For more information refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Bucket - Remove".

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

    ------ WARNING! ------

Without the sun gear in place, the brakes are ineffective. Personal injury or death could result. Provide other means to hold or stop the machine.

    ----------------------

  1. Remove thrust plate (4) .

  1. Remove sun gear (5) from each final drive.

  1. Temporarily reinstall thrust plate (4) and cover (3) back on each final drive.

  1. Remove right hand boom cylinder (6) from the machine. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Boom Cylinder - Remove". Put caps in the hydraulic lines that connect to the right hand boom cylinder.

    Illustration 6g00365075

  1. Start the machine. Raise the boom until the center of the pin bore for the bucket-to-stick pin joint is approximately 1042 mm (41 inch).

    NOTICE

Failure to follow the recommended procedure or the specified tooling that is required for the procedure could result in damage to components.

To avoid component damage, follow the recommended procedure using the recommended tools.

  1. Adjust the length of Tooling (A), and install it in place of the right hand boom cylinder. Install the five bolts, the washers and the nuts to hold the link group together.

    NOTICE

Failure to follow the recommended procedure or the specified tooling that is required for the procedure could result in damage to components.

To avoid component damage, follow the recommended procedure using the recommended tools.

  1. Install Tooling (B) under the main frame at the rear of the machine as shown.

  1. Remove four hose assemblies (7) from the swivel joint.

    Illustration 10g00365266

  1. Remove fittings (8) and plug all openings to the swivel joint.

  1. Remove two hose assemblies (11) from the swivel joint.

  1. Remove locking bolt (9) from the swivel joint.

  1. Loosen hose clamp (10) .

  1. Disconnect grease tube assembly (12) from the block on the frame of the upper structure.

  1. Remove all bolts (13) that hold the upper structure to the undercarriage frame assembly.

    ------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from lifting a heavy assembly.

The heavy assembly can fall if using an incorrect hoist to lift the load.

Be sure the hoist has the correct capacity to lift a heavy assembly. Approximate weight of the body assembly is given below.

  1. Raise the upper structure off of the undercarriage frame assembly with Tooling (B) in 13 mm (0.5 inch) increments. Raise the upper structure approximately 178 mm (7 inch) until it is above swivel joint group (14). Adjust the height of Tooling (B) at the same time to keep the upper structure level. The weight of the upper structure is approximately 10206 kg (22500 lb).

Note: The boot on the swivel joint group is very flexible. This will allow the swivel joint to slide thru it as the upper structure is being raised.

  1. Fasten a chain to the rear of undercarriage frame assembly (15). Pull the undercarriage frame assembly out from under the upper structure with a lift truck. Check the clearance between the upper structure and the swivel joint during the removal procedure. The weight of the undercarriage frame assembly is approximately 5897 kg (13000 lb).
