SUBJECT: Conversion of Closed Circuit Breather System to an Open Circuit Breather System on 3054 Engines installed in 312B and 312C Track-Type Excavators.

PROBLEM:

Complaints of black smoke from the exhaust system by potential engine oil carry-over. The carry-over is from the closed circuit breather into the induction system. The engine oil carry-over could cause high engine oil consumption and engine durability problems on these applications.

SOLUTION:

Black smoke will be reduced and engine durability will increase by converting 3054 engines installed in 312B and 312C Track-Type Excavators from a Closed Circuit Breather to an Open Circuit Breather system. There may be some white smoke emitted from the breather, this is normal.

Remove outlet hose from the Closed Circuit Breather induction hose. Plug main induction hose with 9U-6992 Adapter, 239-5017 Cap, and 127-8287 Hose clamp. Fit new hose with (A) 5P-0765 Hose and 127-8287 Hose clamp, and route to bottom of engine attaching 2 hose clips (B) 3P-2404 Clip to the engine as shown.
