SUBJECT: REPLACEMENT OF THE PIN ASSEMBLY IN THE HYDRAULIC CYLINDER
ROD FOR THE STICK CYLINDER ON CERTAIN EXCAVATORS

PROBLEM:

The pin assembly in the hydraulic cylinder rod may fail on machines that are configured with a long stick. The lubrication hole in the pin decreases the strength of the pin assembly.

SOLUTION:

If the 108-9191 Pin Assembly in the hydraulic cylinder rod for the stick cylinder fails, install a new 1R-6225 Pin Assembly. The 1R-6225 Pin Assembly is a solid pin and does not have a lubrication hole. Use the following installation procedure.

  3. Remove bolt (1) and washer (2). Remove the former pin assembly (3). Reference Illustration 1.
  4. Remove two clips (4), one nut (5), and two hard washers (6). Remove hose assembly (7) and elbow (8).
  5. Install a new 1R-6225 Pin Assembly. Coat the new pin assembly, the bore, and the inside diameter of the bearing with grease before installation. Make sure that the pin assembly is installed in the working position hole (A).
  6. Install bolt (1) and washer (2). Tighten the bolt to a torque of 100 ? 20 N?m (75 ? 15 lb ft).
  7. Install pipe plug (9) in order to prevent the entry of contaminates and the formation of rust.
  8. Use the grease fitting installed in the boss on the rod end of the stick cylinder in order to lubricate the pin assembly. Lubricate the pin assembly according to the recommendations in the Service Manual for your machine.
