SUBJECT: MODIFICATION OF THE SWITCH ASSEMBLY FOR SENSING THE
HYDRAULIC OIL AND ENGINE OIL LEVEL

PROBLEM:

The glass contact in the oil level sensor switch may crack and eventually fail. The switch may also receive insufficient sensing information when the contact is exposed to debris and foreign substances.

SOLUTION:

If the 170-9376 Switch Assembly fails or is not operating correctly, it should be replaced.

A modified 170-9376 Switch Assembly is effective in Excavators that were produced during July 2000. A machine now assembles the lead wires for the glass contacts in the switch. The supplier manufacturing code "05-" that is stamped on the assembly identifies the modified switches. The location of the code stamp is shown in Illustration 1.

An additional modification to the 170-9376 Switch Assembly is effective in Excavators that were produced during February 2001. The switch and lead wires are assembled as a complete unit in order to increase the resistance to debris and foreign substances. The supplier manufacturing code "0Z-" that is stamped on the switch identifies the modified switches. The location of the code stamp is shown in Illustration 1.

(A) Part Number
(B) Manufacture Code Stamp

NOTE: The manufacturing code stamp has two digits. The first digit in the manufacture code stamp represents the manufacture year of the switch assembly. The second digit in the manufacture code stamp represents the manufacture month of the switch assembly. The letters "X", "Y", and "Z" in the second digit position would represent October, November, and December respectively. For example, code "05-" would represent a switch manufacture date of May 2000.
