Problem:

Reports have been received of failure of the drum shaft bearing on Cold Planers. The drum shaft bearing (172-4332 Bearing Gp) is part of the 165-5335 Planer Drive Gp, for PC3 and PC4 Cold Planers, and the 173-6659 Planer Drive Gp, for PC6 and PC9 Cold Planers.

Investigation has determined that inadequate lubrication has been the primary cause of the bearing failures. The lack of lubricant results in seizure of the bearings on the shaft and subsequent damage to and/or failure of the 167-7803 Shaft As. In addition, there is potential for damage to the shaft of the 144-9743 Gerotor Motor. See Figure 1.

Solution:

The risk of failure of the drum shaft bearing and subsequent damage to and/or failure of the shaft assembly can be minimized through proper maintenance of the bearing:

* Inspection and lubrication of the bearing, as recommended in the "Maintenance Interval Schedule"in the Operation and Maintenance Manual.
*Use of the proper lubricating grease. Refer to "Lubricating Grease" in the Maintenance Sectionof the Operation and Maintenance Manual.
