SUBJECT: INCORRECT INSTALLATION OF THE SEALS IN FINAL DRIVES MAY
DAMAGE THE SEALS
PROBLEM:
The Stabilized Metal Ring (SMR) seal may be damaged during assembly if installed incorrectly. The seals must be properly lubricated during assembly. Severe galling and seizing may occur on the metal face of the seal ring if the seals are installed without the proper lubrication.
SOLUTION:
200-5937 Lubricant is provided with the 188-2103 SMR Seal Group. The lubricant is a Molykote G-N paste in a 42 gm (1.5 oz) tube. The lubricant should be applied whenever the SMR seals are installed in the final drive. Illustration 1 shows the location of the seals in the final drive. Illustration 2 shows the detail of the location for applying the lubricant during installation of the seals.
