Installation Of Piston Pin Retainer {1215}

Usage:

All 3500 And 3500B Machine Engines

Illustration. Piston pin retainer opening toward top of the piston crown (1).

At overhaul or when any piston repair is done in the above machine engines, orient the 8N-7296 Piston Pin Retainer opening toward the top of the piston crown. Do NOT assemble the piston pin retainer with the opening below line 2. See the illustration.

NOTE: This applies to all 3500 and 3500B Engines.

Though installed piston pin retainers do not rotate during engine operation, the two ends of the piston pin retainer move a small amount in the piston pin retainer groove in the piston crown. This movement causes a slight amount of wear in the groove. This wear is normal and will not cause a problem as long as the wear occurs toward the top of the crown, above line 2. See the illustration.

NOTICE

The same wear below line 2 can cause cracking of the piston skirt and a major piston failure.
