All Common Services System, Information System Builder, and VIMS software applications require the user to have some Microsoft Windows familiarity. If you are not familiar with Microsoft Windows, please take some time to acquaint yourself with Windows before installing the Caterpillar software programs.

The Common Services Security Management (CSS) program allows the system administrator to assign access rights for each Caterpillar application installed on the computer. The system Administrator should be a person with knowledge of Windows and DOS operating systems and be capable of performing all of the CSS, ISB, and VIMS configuration and operations functions.

After installing the Caterpillar programs, use the Security Management program to set passwords for employees that need access to some functions of the installed Caterpillar software programs. The system administrator can create user profiles to authorize each person's access to some or all Caterpillar program functions. The system administrator can restrict access to program areas by not assigning access rights to a user profile.

The Security Management program allows the system administrator to add, edit or change, or delete user profiles. To set a user profile, start the CSS program. Double-click the cursor on the Common Services group icon in the Windows program manager. Then double-click on the Security Management icon in the Common Services group box. A logon dialog box will appear on the screen. The first time the owner or system administrator starts the Security Management program, enter MASTER for the User and MASTER for the Password in the Logon dialog screen.

The owner or system administrator should change the logon password so that only the owner or system administrator has access to system administration functions. The MASTER user identification, and MASTER password allows full access to all user functions of the Caterpillar programs. After establishing a new system administrator login ID and password, remove the Master-Master profile. This removal assures that only the system administrator has access to security rights.

While still in the logon dialog box, enter a new password in the "New Password" entry point. The logon program requires you to re-enter the new password in the "Verify Password" entry point. Be sure to make a note of your new password. You will not be able to start or run the Caterpillar programs if you can not enter the correct password at the logon screen. The only way get around the CSS security is to do a Windows removal of CSS and all Caterpillar software and then reinatall CSS and the Caterpillar software.

The following list shows the Caterpillar program areas that allow password protection. Each one of the items on the list is an icon in the Common Services Group Box, the Information System Builder Group box, or a menu item under a selected program icon. The system administrator should understand the functions listed and then determine which employees need access to a given function.

CSS Login

The Common Services Logon/Logoff program controls access to all installed Caterpillar application programs. Each user must have a unique user identification and password assigned. The user needs to enter the identification and password in the logon dialog box to start and run the Caterpillar application programs.

CSS Login Preferences

The Common Services Preferences dialog allows you to specify a period the computer is inactive before automatic logoff occurs. If automatic logoff happens before you close a Caterpillar application program, you must logon again to close the open program before Windows will allow you to quit.

CSS Page Setup

The Common Services Page Setup program allows you to specify the font size and character style for titles, headings and report detail for the Caterpillar application programs.

CSS Remove

The Common Services Remove program allows you to remove a Caterpillar application program from your computer. The program removes only those items that are unique to the application being removed. For example, if two Caterpillar applications share a program file, both applications must be removed before the shared file is removed. Programs and files eliminated from a disk during the removal process cannot be recovered unless they were backed up before or during the removal process.

CSS Security Maintenance

The Common Services Security Management program allows the system administrator to define user profiles for each Caterpillar application on the computer. The administrator may add, change or delete user profiles. Each individual user profile grants permission to access programs, functions within a program and to update specific fields or files.

CSS Install Applications

The Common Services Install Application program provides a quick and easy way to install Caterpillar applications. Once you click on the Install Application icon in the Common Services group box, you need only follow the instructions displayed in the subsequent dialog boxes to complete the installation of any Caterpillar application.

CSS Export

The Common Services Export program allows you to select information from a Caterpillar data file and place it in a file to be used by other application programs such as spreadsheets. This file can be saved on the hard drive or a floppy diskette.

CSS Database Recovery

The Common Services Database Recovery program checks the integrity of Caterpillar data files. The program will attempt to recover damaged files.

ISB Preferred Customer

The Preferred Customer parameter allows the VIMS software engineers access to some configuration parameters (revision control) that are not under business unit revision control. Parameters under revision control can only be modified by VIMS software engineers.

Vital Information Management System (VIMS) uses the following four programs to interface with and analyze data from the machine on-board electronic controls.

VIMS Communicate

The Communicate program manages the communications between a Service Tool (Personal computer) and an on-board system on a given machine. The Service Tool RS232 port and the machine must be connected with a cable. The program will automatically attempt to establish communications when you select the Communicate icon from the VIMS group box.

VIMS Analysis

The Analysis program allows the user to access, view, and analyze VIMS data after returning from a site with the information retrieved from a machine. VIMS Analysis will print reports in tabular and graphical format.

VIMS Merge

The Merge program will combine, in chronological order, new downloads with historical files. The Merge program allows development of a historical database for each machine. This allows the user to save data for a given machine, over time, in one common place. The amount of file space needed depends on machine usage. Allow about 1Mb of hard drive space per machine for each year of data merged and stored. Diagram C shows the menu items associated with the VIMS Merge program.

VIMS Utilities

The Utilities program is a support program used to maintain standard information that can be used by all VIMS programs. The data maintained for each machine in a fleet includes machine serial and equipment numbers as well as site information. The Utilities program also allows the user to maintain lists of sites and model numbers. The model, site, and machine information must be entered into the Utilities program before other VIMS programs may be used. The VIMS-PC Utilities Program Menu shows the menu items associated with the VIMS Utilities program.

The VIMS-PC Communicate Program Menu shows the menu items associated with the VIMS Communicate program.

The VIMS Communicate program Comm, Preferences menu item has several items that allow security restrictions. The Preferences selections are:

VIMS Preferences

The VIMS Preferences dialog box allows the user to customize communications and download parameters. Also the types of downloads allowed for a user are configured here.

VIMS Basic Download

A VIMS Basic Download profile is assigned to a user by the system administrator to allow someone to connect to a machine, download basic data, disconnect from the machine, and exit the VIMS-PC program. As soon as the user selects the Communicate program after connecting a cable between the Service Tool and a machine, VIMS-PC establishes communications and does the download and logoff automatically.

VIMS Reset Trend, Cumulative, Histogram

The VIMS Preferences dialog box is where the reset of these data functions is configured.

The VIMS Communicate program Data menu item has several components that allow security restrictions. They are:

VIMS Download

The Download Data dialog box allows the system administrator to select the types of data to download from the on-board system when setting up a user profile. All files downloaded from the machine use the equipment number (as assigned in Utilities) for the DOS file name and have a unique extension to indicate the type of data.

VIMS Data Logger On/Off

The Data Logger dialog box allows you to control the data logger from the Service Tool. In addition to being able to turn the data logger on or off, the dialog box shows the time remaining in the on-board data logger memory if the data logger is off. If the Data Logger is on, the Time Remaining is grayed and does not reflect the actual time remaining.

VIMS Data Logger Reset

The Data Logger dialog box allows you to control the data logger from the Service Tool. Pressing the Reset button deletes any data logger data that exists in the on-board system. This clears the memory area and creates more recording room in the on-board system.

The VIMS Communicate program Configure menu item has several components that allow security restrictions. They are:

VIMS Calibrate Payload

The Calibrate Truck Payload dialog allows you to send a calibration command to the on-board system. The Truck Payload actual calibration is performed by the on-board system. See the appropriate truck operation and maintenance manual for calibration procedure.

VIMS Upload Configuration

The Upload Machine Configuration dialog box allows you to send (flash) a configuration file from the Service Tool to an on-board system. The configuration files allow the on-board system to identify sensors and switches unique to the specific machine. A configuration upload causes all on-board stored data to reset. This reset destroys all data and configuration files stored on the machine. Only files which are compatible with the current machine should be uploaded. If you are not sure about compatibility, check with factory product support or engineering support before uploading a configuration.

VIMS Component Change

The Component Change feature tracks changes to machine components. Selecting the component change dialog box downloads all VIMS information from the on-board system of the connected machine. You can change the serial number of a component and enter a component description. All component changes are logged in the Audit Trail file.

VIMS Upload Source

The VIMS Upload Source option allows a user to load (flash) the hardware operating system into the on-board modules. The hardware operating system allows the on-board main module to use the configuration program to monitor machine parameters.

VIMS Upload Serial Number

The Assign Serial Number dialog box allows the user to change the serial number stored within the main module. The factory will install the serial number on a new machine.

VIMS Upload Equipment Number

The Assign Equipment Number dialog box allows the user to assign or change the equipment number on the machine. The Equipment Number is a unique identifier assigned by the customer.

The system administrator can assign separate security rights for uploading serial numbers and equipment numbers.

VIMS SMU Reset

The reset Time/Date/SMU dialog box allows the user to reset or change the SMU (actually SMH) parameter within the main module. This parameter is the total machine/engine operating hours.

VIMS Upload Time

The reset Time/Date/SMU dialog box allows the user to change the date and time parameters stored in the main module.

VIMS Save Group

The Group Open dialog box allows you to select a previously saved group of switches or sensors to display in the View Real Time Data dialog box. A group also allows quick viewing of data logger or event recorder files.

VIMS Save Group As

The Group Save As dialog box allows you to save the current group of switches or sensors under a new name. If you have made changes to the selected group, the changes will show up in the newly named group. The original group remains unchanged. This feature allows you to use the existing group as the basis for creating new groups with different characteristics.

VIMS Delete Group

The Group Delete dialog box allows you to delete a previously created group of components or sensors.

VIMS Exception Criteria

The exception criteria dialog box allows the user to modify the out of range criteria for parameters selected to display on analysis reports. Each of the data types - event, cumulative and histogram - has an exception criteria dialog box. This feature is not fully developed yet.

VIMS Audit Trail

An Audit Trail is one of the selections under Reports. The Audit Trail report shows a log of functions performed by the VIMS Off Board Communicate program along with the date and time a particular user was into VIMS-PC.

VIMS Print Setup

The Print Setup dialog box allows you to select the printer where a report will be sent. You may also modify how a report prints by changing the paper size, paper source, or orientation. Changes made in this dialog box will apply until you exit the program. The changes will not be there when you restart VIMS-PC. Actual print setup comes from CSS. Make permanent changes for printer parameters in CSS. The Print or Print Preview functions will not work if a printer is not set up in the Windows Control Panel.

The VIMS-PC Merge Program Menu shows the menu items associated with the VIMS Merge program.
