Usage:
3176C (2AW) INDUSTRIAL ENGINES
Problem:
Some of these engines that are equipped with a RPTO may be experiencing oil leaks at the rear crankshaft seal area. Occasionally, the weight of the plate, located on the transmission side of the RPTO housing, can cause a gap between the crankshaft seal and the crankshaft gear journal. If assembled incorrectly, the dust lip of the seal can become crushed on top due to the misalignment of the plate. As a result, an oil leak may develop.
Solution:
Remove the transmission and loosen the bolts that hold the plate in place on the RPTO housing. See the illustration. Align the plate so the gap between the crankshaft seal dust lip and the crankshaft gear is equal. Tighten all of the plate bolts to standard torque. Reinstall the transmission.
NOTE: The "Production Fix" adds dowels to the housing to locate the plate correctly. This fix can also be seen in the Power Connection; Live July 8, 1998; Video Tape; LEVN4438.
