Electronic Control Analyzer Programmer (ECAP) Timing Calibration Problem Caterpillar

Electronic Control Analyzer Programmer (ECAP) Timing Calibration Problem

Usage:

ENGINES3116 (8WL),
3126 (1WM, 4ES),
3126B (7AS),
3176B (9CK),
C-10 (2PN, 8YS),
C-12 (1YN, 9NS),
3406B (8TC, 5YG, 2EK),
3406C (4CK),
3406E (5EK, 5DS, 6TS, 1LW) TRUCK ENGINES

Problem:

A "bug" has been identified in the ECAP version 2.1 and 2.2 software. This "bug" is NOT associated with other ECAP versions and the "bug" does NOT exist with any versions of Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET). This "bug" affects the appearance of the timing calibration on all electronic, on-highway, truck engines with mechanically misaligned timing gears or a bent timing probe.

If an Electronic Control Module (ECM) has an active 22-13 Timing Calibration fault code, the timing calibrations has failed or has not been initially performed.

After performing the timing calibration with an ECAP with version 2.1 or 2.2 software, the ECAP will always display the "Timing Calibration Successful" message even if the calibration has failed due to a bent timing probe or mechanically misaligned timing gears. The Active Timing Calibration Fault (22-13) will be present.

Solution:

Since the "Timing Calibration Successful" message will always be displayed after performing the "Timing Calibration", the Active Faults screen should be checked to verify that the 22-13 (Active Timing Calibration Fault) does not still exist. If the 22-13 fault is gone, the calibration is successful and no further troubleshooting is needed. If the 22-13 fault still exists, then the ECAP erroneously displayed the "Timing Calibration Successful" message and the timing calibration should be considered unsuccessful.

Do NOT replace the Electronic Control Module (ECM) or Engine Speed/Timing Sensor or the timing probe. Follow the Troubleshooting Guide steps for an unsuccessful timing calibration which include:

1. Check the timing calibration probe to make sure it is not bent.
2. Check the wiring harness to make sure is not damaged.
3. If the engine has been recently disassembled, check the timing gear alignment. It may be one tooth off.
4. The Cam Idler backlash should be measured and adjusted if unable to calibrate after verifying the problems do not exist due to conditions stated in Steps 1, 2 and 3.

NOTE: We do NOT recommend discontinuing the use of ECAP for timing calibrations. Most of the time the engine will calibrate and not display an Active Diagnostic fault 22-13 code.

Further information on a software update that fixes this problem will be provided when available.
