Usage:
ALL CATERPILLAR MACHINES POWERED BY 3114, 3116, AND 3126 ENGINES WITH MECHANICAL UNIT INJECTORS
Problem:
The rivet that retains the governor link to the rack bar can become loose. A loose rivet can result in rivet wear. This rivet wear can result in a variety of engine performance symptoms including:
- * Low idle instability.
- * Engine dying from low idle.
- * Engine surge under operational loads.
- * Engine dying from low idle.
Solution:
If any of the above symptoms are experienced, inspect the governor link rivet by removing the Number 1 Rocker Stand Assembly. Use a screwdriver to release the spring load on the governor link assembly. See the illustration.
NOTE: Do not remove the spring. Just compress the spring to see the rivet.
Inspect the riveted joint between the lever and the link. If there is any relative movement between the rivet and the lever, replace the Rack Control Assembly.
If the Rack Control Assembly is replaced, enter a SIMS/Warranty report on the 102-7459 Rack Control Assembly (6 cylinder) or 4P-9048 Rack Control Assembly (4 cylinder). Report the Date Code from the side of the link. In the Date Code (YDDD#), the "Y" is the year, the "DDD" is the Julian Day, and the "#" is the number of cylinders (03 = 4 cylinders, 04 = 6 cylinders). A sample SIMS comment might be: "Rivet Worn-607504".
