Engine Control Module (ECM) Software "Bug" Identified With Vehicle Speed Limit (VSL) Driver Incentive Feature Caterpillar

Engine Control Module (ECM) Software "Bug" Identified With Vehicle Speed Limit (VSL) Driver Incentive Feature

Usage:

ENGINESC-10 (8YS),
C-12 (9NS),
3406E (5DS, 1LW) TRUCK ENGINES

Problem:

All existing heavy duty 1998 engine ECM software that has the VLS Driver Incentive feature has a "bug". This includes the DEC97 through MAR98 release dated software for the above engines.

The Driver Incentive feature has a defect that may allow a truck to operate at speeds above the desired VSL.

The problem occurs when:

1. The high Cruise Control Speed Set Limit is programmed above the VSL.

(and)

2. The driver is using the throttle to override the Cruise Control set speed.

If these two conditions are met, the effective VSL is equal to the High Cruise Control Set Speed, plus double the VSL incentive. Therefore, if the reward is programmed to be 5 mph and these conditions are met, the effective VSL is equal to the High Cruise Control Set Speed plus 10 mph.

Again, any 1998 heavy duty truck software release prior to MAY 98 has this defect in the VSL Driver Incentive reward.

Solution:

The root cause of the problem has been found. A fix will be implemented in the Part Service Only MAY 98 software release for Pre-98 Engines, and in the next production update for 1998 engines. The problem can be contained by having the customer reduce the Maximum VSL incentive until the software fix is released.
