Problem:
There are reports of 1997 vintage Exhaust Brakes being installed on 3126B (7AS) Truck Engines. This is NOT acceptable.
The exhaust brakes (Jacob, Wabco, Williams, PacBrake, Etc) used on 1997 and earlier 3116 and 3126 ("2-Valve") Truck Engines were set at 55 psi of back pressure. The 3126B ("3-Valve") Truck Engines capability of 40 psi back pressure provides similar braking horsepower at 2400 rpm as the higher pressure on "2-Valve" engines. The 1997 vintage Exhaust Brakes can cause damage to a 3126B Truck Engines.
Solution:
The Exhaust Brake model numbers that are approved for the 3126B Truck Engine are: PacBrake C10353, Wabco 421 429 973 0, and Jacobs 025223. If you find a 3126B Truck Engine equipped with a 1997 Exhaust Brake, the 1997 Exhaust Brake orifice should be drilled out to the 3126B Truck Engines Orifice size indicated in the following chart. See the attached PacBrake Service Bulletin, Number 135 (1 page) or the attached Jacobs Vehicle Systems, Jacobs Exhaust Brake Service Letter X9, (3 pages) for the proper procedures.
