Note: These diagnostic codes report the data link configuration status, but not the physical condition of the data link.

Possible causes of an FMI 14 diagnostic code are:

  • Incorrect personality module code

  • Invalid parameter configuration

  • Incorrect ECM

  • ECM is flashed with software that is incompatible with another ECM

Procedure

Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Steps     Values     Results

1. Identify The Active CID/FMI Code Associated With The Data Link

A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET).

B. Check for codes.

No data link code

OK - FMI 14 is not present.

STOP

Not OK - FMI 14 is present.

Go to Step 2.

2. Check Connections And Harness

A. Inspect the circuit harness connectors (1).

B. Inspect the harness.

A. Connectors are:
* Clean
* Secure
* In good condition

B. Harness is not:
*Kinked
*Chaffed

OK - Connections and harness are good.
Go to Step 3.

Not OK - A connection or harness problem exists.

Repair: Correct all connection and harness problems (1).
Verify that the problem is corrected.

STOP

3. Check For An Associated FMI 9 Code

A. Establish communication between the Cat ET and the suspect electronic control module (ECM).

B. Check for an associated FMI 9 code.

No code

OK - Associated FMI 9 code is not present.

Go to Step 4.

Not OK - Associated FMI 9 code is present.

Repair:
A. Repair all associated FMI 9 codes (2).

B. If an FMI 14 code is present after resolving the FMI 9 code, go to Step 4.

C. If an FMI 14 code is not present after resolving the FMI 9 code, return the machine to service.

Stop

4. Check The Personality Module Code For Compatibility With The Application

A. Use Cat ET.

B. Select the ECM that is related to the code.

C. Check for valid personality code.

Valid personality code

OK - Personality code is valid.

Go to Step 5.

Not OK - Personality code is not valid.

Repair:
A. Obtain the correct flash file.

B. Flash the ECM (3).

C. Reset all active codes and clear all logged codes.

Stop

5. Check The Configuration Parameters

A. Use Cat ET.

B. Select "Configuration Parameters".

C. Verify that the configuration parameters are correct.

Correct configuration parameters

OK - Configuration parameters are correct.

Go to Step 6.

Not OK - Configuration parameters are not correct.

Repair:
A. Program the parameters.

B. Reset all active codes and clear all logged codes.

Stop

6. Check For Compatibility With Other ECMs On The Data Link

A. Use Cat ET.

B. Select the ECM that is related to the logged code.

C. Determine if ECMs on the data link are compatible.
Use the as shipped information found in SISweb.

Compatible ECMs

OK - The ECMs are compatible.

Contact your technical communicator (4).

STOP

Not OK - The ECMs are not compatible.

Repair:
A. Replace the incompatible ECM with the correct ECM (4).

B. Reset all active codes and clear all logged codes.

Stop
