Illustration 1 g03358924 - Install lower cap (21) on the lower hitch. Fasten the cap in position with four equally spaced bolts.
- Coat the bores with 5P-3931 Anti-Seize Compound. Lower the temperature of the lower bearing cup (25) to
−75° ± 5°C (−103° ± 9°F) . Install lower bearing cup (25) in the lower hitch. Use Tooling (L) to install the bearing cup until the bearing cup contact with the lower cap. - Lubricate bearing cone (24). Install bearing cone (24) in the lower hitch.
Note: The two bearing cones are installed facing opposite directions.
- Lubricate bearing cone (23). Install bearing cone (23).
- Lower the temperature of the upper bearing cup (22) to
−75° ± 5°C (−103° ± 9°F) . Install upper bearing cup (22) in the lower hitch. Make sure that bearing cup (22) is down far enough to create a slight contact pressure on the bearing cones.Show/hide tableIllustration 2 g00885658 - Install the original shims (20) and top cap (19). Fasten the cap in position with five equally spaced bolts (18). Tighten the bolts to a torque of
100 ± 20 N·m (74 ± 15 lb ft) . Install Tooling (M) on the bearing cones. Use Tooling (M) and a torque wrench to check the rolling torque. The correct rolling torque is11.3 to 39.6 N·m (100 to 350 lb in) .Note: Adding shims (20) will decrease the amount of rolling torque. Removing shims (20) will increase the amount of rolling torque.
- Remove Tooling (M), the upper cap, and the lower cap. Record the correct number of shims (20) for later installation.

Illustration 3 g00523210 - Use Tooling (L) to install the seals in the upper cap and the lower cap. Install the seal in the lower cap with the sealing lip toward the outside of the cap. Install the seal in the upper cap with the sealing lip inside the cap.
- Lubricate the seals with 5P-0960 Molybdenum Grease.
Note: Align the upper cap and the lower cap with the alignment marks that were made during the original removal.
- Install the upper cap, the lower cap, and the number of shims that were determined during Step 7. Tighten the bolts to a torque of
100 ± 20 N·m (74 ± 15 lb ft) . - Install the spacer (21A) in the upper cap.

Illustration 4 g03358981 - Use three bolts to fasten lower cap (16) to the upper front frame.
- Coat the bores with 5P-3931 Anti-Seize Compound. Lower the temperature of the bearing cup (29) to
−75° ± 5°C (−103° ± 9°F) . Install bearing cup (29) in the upper hitch. Use Tooling (L) to install the bearing cup until the bearing cup contact with the lower cap. - Lubricate bearing cone (28). Install bearing cone (28) in the upper hitch.
- Lubricate bearing cone (27). Install bearing cone (27).
- Lower the temperature of the bearing cup (26) to
−75° ± 5°C (−103° ± 9°F) . Install bearing cup (26) in the upper hitch. Make sure that bearing cup (26) is down far enough to create a slight contact pressure on the bearing cones.Show/hide tableIllustration 5 g00885726 - Install the original shims and top cap (14). Fasten the cap in position with three equally spaced bolts. Tighten the bolts to a torque of
100 ± 20 N·m (74 ± 15 lb ft) . Install Tooling (N) on the bearing cones. Use Tooling (N) and a torque wrench to check the rolling torque. The correct rolling torque is2.3 to 13.6 N·m (20 to 121 lb in) .Note: Adding shims will decrease the amount of rolling torque. Removing shims will increase the amount of rolling torque.
- Remove Tooling (N), the upper cap, and the lower cap. Record the correct number of shims for later installation.

- Lubricate the seals with 5P-0960 Molybdenum Grease.
Note: Align the upper cap and the lower cap with the alignment marks that were made during the original removal.
- Install the upper cap, the lower cap, and the number of shims that were determined during Step 18. Tighten the bolts to a torque of
100 ± 20 N·m (74 ± 15 lb ft) .Show/hide tableIllustration 7 g00885528 - Lower the temperature of sleeve bearing (12). Install sleeve bearing (12) in the upper hitch of the rear frame. Make sure that the face of the bearing is even with the outer surface of the rear frame.
- Repeat Step 23 for the installation of sleeve bearing (17).

Illustration 8 g06359498 Typical example Show/hide tableIllustration 9 g06358266 Typical example Note: Be sure that Tooling (A) in the rear frame is moved with the front frame.
- Use a lift truck to push the front frame toward the rear frame. Push the front frame until the front hitch and the rear hitch are in alignment.
- Use Tooling (A) and a hoist to raise the hitch of the front frame. Refer to Tool Operating Manual, NEHS1328, "Lift Group (Stand - 60 Ton)" for more information on Tooling (A).
- Use the lift truck and Tooling (D) to lower the hitch of the front frame.
- Use Tooling (A) to raise or lower the hitch of the rear frame.
Note: The two individual hydraulic lift stands that constitute Tooling (A) may be operated independently of each other. This will help in the alignment of the pin bores.
