Personal injury can result if the machine moves while checking the service brakes. If the machine begins to move during the check, reduce the engine speed immediately and engage the parking brake. |
This procedure should be used to determine if the service brakes are functioning properly. This procedure is not intended to measure the maximum brake holding effort. The brake holding effort that is required to sustain a machine at a specific engine rpm varies depending on the machine.
The 816F Landfill Compactor is equipped with two transmission speeds. The test procedure for the 816F varies from the test procedure for the 814F Wheel Tractor and the 815F Soil Compactor.
Test the service brakes on a dry, level surface. Make sure that the area around the machine is clear. Move the machine away from other operating machines and away from personnel.
Test Procedure for the 814F and the 815F
- Make sure that steering frame lock is in the STORED position.
- Fasten the seat belt before you test the service brakes.
- Start the engine. Raise the work tool slightly.
- Fully apply the right service brake pedal.
- Disengage the parking brake.
- Move the transmission direction control lever to the FORWARD position. Move the gear speed selector to THIRD SPEED position.
- Gradually increase the engine speed to 1800 rpm. Do not exceed 1800 rpm.
- When the service brakes are engaged, the machine should not move.
- Reduce the engine speed to low idle. Move the transmission direction control lever to the NEUTRAL position. Engage the parking brake.
- Lower the work tool to the ground. Stop the engine.
- If the machine was able to move during the testing of the service brakes, inspect the brake components for wear or damage. Service the brake system before you return the machine to operation.
Reference: For additional information on checking the service brake disc, refer to the Service Manual Module Testing and Adjusting, "Service Brake Discs - Check" for the machine that is being serviced.
- After the brakes are serviced, perform this procedure again.
Test Procedure for the 816F
- Follow the 814F test procedures in Step 1 to Step 3.
- Fully apply the right service brake pedal.
- Disengage the parking brake.
- Move the transmission direction control lever to the FORWARD position. Move the gear speed selector to SECOND SPEED position.
- Gradually increase the engine speed to 1400 rpm. Do not exceed 1400 rpm.
- When the service brakes are engaged, the machine should not move.
- Reduce the engine speed to low idle. Move the transmission direction control switch to the NEUTRAL position.
- Perform this test again after servicing the brakes.
