3176C, 3196 and 3406E Engines for 725, 730, 735, 740, and 740 Ejector Articulated Trucks Caterpillar

E015 High Engine Coolant Temperature Derate

Usage:

3176C 3PD
Conditions Which Generate This Code:

The ECM detects all of the following conditions:

3176C and 3196 Engines

  • The engine has been running more than three minutes. This three minute delay begins once the engine speed is within 50 rpm of the low idle setting.

  • Engine coolant temperature is greater than 102 °C (216 °F) for more than four seconds.

  • 110-03 Engine Coolant Temperature open/short to +batt is not active.

  • 110-04 Engine Coolant Temperature short to ground is not active.

3406E Engine

  • The engine has been running more than 60 seconds.

  • Engine coolant temperature is greater than 102 °C (216 °F) for more than four seconds.

  • 110-03 Engine Coolant Temperature open/short to +batt is not active.

  • 110-04 Engine Coolant Temperature short to ground is not active.

System Response:

The ECM will log the diagnostic event. The ECM will derate the engine power by 12.5 percent for each degree celsius above 102 °C (216 °F). The maximum derate is 50 percent of full power. The ECM will restore full engine power when the engine coolant temperature falls to 100 °C (212 °F) for 20 seconds.

  • Low power

  • There may be a problem with the cooling system.

  • There may be a problem with the coolant temperature sensor.

Test Step 1. Check for Diagnostic Codes.

  1. Connect ET to the service tool connector.

  1. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position. The engine should be OFF.

  1. Check for any active diagnostic codes or logged diagnostic codes.

Expected Result:

There should be no diagnostic codes that are present.

Results:

  • OK - Proceed to Test Step 2.

  • Not OK -

Repair: Repair the diagnostic codes that are present. Refer to the appropriate topic in the "Troubleshooting With a Diagnostic Code" section of this manual.Ensure that the repair eliminates the problem.

    STOP

Test Step 2. Perform a Check of the Cooling System.

  1. Perform a check of the cooling system. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Coolant Temperature is Too High" for possible causes.

Expected Result:

There are no problems with the cooling system.

Results:

  • OK - There may be an intermittent problem.

Repair: Monitor the operation of the engine.Repair the problem.Ensure that the repair eliminates the problem.

    STOP
