Start By:

  1. Remove the final drive and the wheel. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive, Brake, and Wheel - Remove" for the machine that is being serviced.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Place the final drive and the wheel in a vertical position on a hard, level surface. The combined weight of the final drive and of the wheel is 770 kg (1700 lb).

  2. Remove four bolts (1) that fasten the planetary carrier to the wheel.

  3. Attach Tooling (A), a suitable hoist, and suitable lifting slings to planetary carrier (2), as shown.

  4. Use the hoist in order to remove planetary carrier (2). The weight of the planetary carrier is 213 kg (470 lb).

    Note: Steps 5 through 10 are used for the disassembly of the planetary carrier.

  5. Remove O-ring seal (3) from planetary carrier (2).

  6. Place the planetary assembly on suitable wood blocks, as shown.

  7. Use a soft faced hammer in order to remove planetary shaft (4) from planetary carrier (2).

    Note: The planetary shaft is a slip fit to the planetary carrier.

  8. Remove two thrust washers (5) and planetary gear (6) from the carrier.

  9. Remove ring (8) and two bearings (7) and (9) from planetary gear (6).

  10. Repeat Steps 6 through 9 for the remaining two planetary gears.

  11. Remove bolts (10) and retainer (11).

  12. Remove shim pack (12).

  13. Install Tooling (B) in the hole of hub (13). Repeat this step for the two remaining holes, as shown.

  14. Attach a suitable hoist to the lifting slings.

  15. Use the hoist in order to remove hub (13) and gear (14) as a unit. The combined weight of the hub and of the gear is 143 kg (315 lb).

  16. Place hub and gear (14) on suitable wood blocks, as shown.

    Note: Leave the lifting slings and the hoist attached to the hub and the gear.

  17. Remove eight bolts (15) and four plates (16).

  18. Use the hoist in order to lift hub (13) from ring gear (14). The weight of the hub is 68 kg (150 lb). Remove bushing (13A) if needed.

    Typical Example

  19. To remove bearing cone (17) from hub (13), turn the hub so that the bearing cone is facing downward, as shown.

    Note: Do not apply heat directly to the hub. Excessive heat may reduce the service life of the hub.

  20. Use a suitable torch in order to heat the bearing cone evenly around the circumference. Continue to heat the bearing cone until the bearing cone falls from the hub.

  21. Install Tooling (C) to wheel (18).

  22. Attach a suitable hoist and lifting slings to Tooling (C).

  23. Use the hoist in order to carefully remove wheel (18) from the spindle. The weight of the wheel is 222 kg (490 lb).

  24. Remove Duo-Cone seal (19).

  25. Use a hammer and a punch in order to remove bearing cups (20) and (21).

    Typical Example

  26. Remove Duo-Cone seal (23) from spindle (24).

  27. To remove bearing cone (25) from spindle (24), turn the spindle onto the opposite side so that the bearing cone is facing downward, as shown.

    Note: Do not apply heat directly to the spindle. Excessive heat may reduce the service life of the spindle.

  28. Use a suitable torch in order to heat the bearing cone evenly around the circumference. Continue to heat the bearing cone until the bearing cone falls from the spindle.
