Start By:

  1. Remove the drive shaft assembly. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive Shaft- Remove and Install".

  2. Remove the fuel tank. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fuel Tank - Remove".


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


Note: Put identification marks on all hose assemblies, tube assemblies, and harness assemblies for installation purposes. Plug and cap all connections to prevent contamination.

  1. Put a suitable container in position under drain (1) and drain (4) to contain the oil from torque converter (3). The capacity of torque converter (3) is approximately 568 L (150 US gal).

  2. Remove plug (2) and plug (5) to drain the oil from torque converter (3).

  3. Position Tooling (A) (not shown) to drain (1) and to drain (4). Drain the oil from torque converter (3).

  4. Check O-ring seals and the components for wear or damage. Replace the components, if necessary.

  5. Lubricate the O-ring seals lightly with the lubricant that is being sealed.

  6. Install plug (2), plug (5), and the O-ring seals to the torque converter (3).

  7. Disconnect tube assembly (6) from the gear pump (7).

  8. Disconnect hose assembly (8) from gear pump (7).

  9. Disconnect hose assembly (9) from the gear pump (10). Remove a washer and a bolt (11) from the clip. Move hose assembly (9) away from the work area.

  10. Disconnect hose assembly (12) from manifold (13).

  11. Disconnect hose assembly (15) from manifold (14).

  12. Disconnect hose assemblies (16), (17), and (18) from torque converter (3).

  13. Disconnect hose assembly (19) from filter base (20). Remove bolt (21) that secures harness assembly (22) to filter base (20).

  14. Remove nuts (23) and remove harness assembly (22) from switch assembly.

  15. Remove bolts (24) and remove filter base (20) from torque converter (3).

  16. Use a suitable lifting device (not shown) to remove filter base (20) from torque converter (3). The weight of filter base (20) is approximately 85 kg (189 lb).

  17. Disconnect harness assembly (25) from the manifold (26).

  18. Disconnect harness assembly (27) from transmission input speed sensor (28).

  19. Remove nuts (29) from the switch assembly (30). Disconnect harness assembly (31) from the switch assembly (30).

  20. Disconnect harness assembly (33) from switch assembly (32).

  22. Remove tube assembly (36) from torque converter (3) and coupling (37).

  23. Remove bolt (38) and a clamp from the rail assembly. Remove tube assembly (39) from the rail assembly.

  24. Remove tube assembly (40) from torque converter (3) and coupling (41).

  26. Remove elbow (43) from manifold (14). Remove fitting (44) and fitting (45) from torque converter (3).

  27. Put Tooling (B) in position on torque converter (3), as shown. Secure Tooling (B) to a suitable lifting device. Remove bolts (46) that hold torque converter (3) to engine (47).

    Note: The following step is the procedure for adding a new torque converter to the engine.

  28. With Tooling (D), remove bolts (50). Remove bracket (49) and shims (48) from torque converter (3) and engine (47).

    Note: The following step is the procedure for reusing the former torque converter.

  29. With Tooling (D), remove bolts (50). Remove bracket (49) and shims (48) from engine (47).

  30. Repeat Steps 28 or 29 for remaining bracket (51).

  31. Use Tooling (B) to remove the torque converter (3) from engine (47). The weight of torque converter (3) is approximately 2476 kg (5459 lb).

    Note: Torque converter (3) may be lowered onto Tooling (E). Optional Wheel Kit may be used for maneuvering Tooling (E) in unloaded state. Wheels must be retarded prior to loading.

  32. Remove O-ring seal (52) from engine (47).

  33. Remove O-ring seal (53) and seal (54) from torque converter (3).

  34. Put brackets (56) in position on torque converter (3). Install bolts (55), as shown.

  35. Put torque converter (3) in position on a stand. Remove Tooling (B). Keep torque converter (3) in the vertical position on a stand, as shown.

  36. Install Tooling (C) onto shipping cover (57), as shown. Secure Tooling (C) to a suitable lifting device. Position shipping cover (57) on torque converter (3), as shown.

  37. Install bolts (58) to secure shipping cover (57) to torque converter (3).

  38. Lower torque converter (3) to the horizontal storage position on a stand, as shown. Remove Tooling (C) from torque converter (3).

  39. Install a bolt (59) to secure torque converter (3) to a suitable stand.
