Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
Personal injury can result from the sudden release of high pressure oil. Be sure the engine has been shut off for a minimum of five minutes to ensure that the accumulator pressure is zero. The accumulator is filled with dry nitrogen. Do not loosen or remove the valve or the cap from the top of the accumulator. |
- Release the nitrogen charge from the steering accumulator. Refer to Steering Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, SENR1492, "Steering Accumulator - Test and Charge" for the proper procedure.
- Drain the hydraulic oil from the steering hydraulic tank. The capacity of the steering hydraulic tank is
91 L (24 US gal) . Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7173, "Steering System Oil - Change" for the correct procedure.Show/hide tableIllustration 1 g00496691 Show/hide tableIllustration 2 g00496687 Show/hide tableIllustration 3 g00496689 - Position a suitable container under accumulator (1) in order to contain hydraulic oil for storage or disposal.
- Disconnect hose assembly (5). Remove adapter (4) from accumulator (1).
- Use Tooling (A) (not shown) and a hoist in order to support accumulator (1).
- Remove three bolts (3), the washers, and two nuts. Remove lower clamp (2).
- Remove three bolts (3), the washers, and two nuts. Remove upper clamp (2).
- Remove accumulator (1) from the frame assembly. The weight of accumulator (1) is

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the removal procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.
Note: Put identification marks on all hose assemblies and on all tube assemblies for installation purposes. Plug all hose assemblies and all tube assemblies. This will help to prevent fluid loss and this helps to prevent contaminants from entering the system.
