Axle Shaft - Remove and Install

Removal Procedure


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


Note: The removal procedures for the front axle shafts and for the rear axle shafts are identical.

  1. Move the machine until drain plug (3) is in DOWNWARD position. Remove drain plug (3) and drain the oil into a suitable container.

  1. Remove six bolts (1), the washers and cover assembly (2) .

  1. Remove O-ring seal (4) from the final drive.

  1. Install 1/2" - 13 NC Eyebolt (5) in the end of the axle shaft. Use the eyebolt to pull axle shaft (6) from the final drive by approximately 508 mm (20 inch).

  1. Attach a hoist and a suitable lifting sling to axle shaft (6), as shown.

  1. Use the hoist to carefully remove axle shaft (6). The weight of the axle shaft is 41 kg (90 lb).

  1. Remove retaining ring (7) and sun gear (8) from axle shaft (6) .

Note: The installation procedures for the front axle shaft and for the rear axle shafts are identical.

Note: Thoroughly clean all of the components prior to installation.

  1. Install sun gear (8) and retaining ring (7) on axle shaft (6) .

  1. Attach a hoist and a suitable lifting sling to the axle shaft.

  1. Use the hoist to carefully install axle shaft (6) in the final drive. The weight of the axle shaft is 41 kg (90 lb). Remove the lifting sling.

  1. Slide Tooling (A) over the end of the axle shaft, as shown. Use Tooling (A) to guide the axle shaft in position in the final drive.

  1. Align sun gear (8) with the planetary gears and slide the sun gear completely on the axle shaft. Remove Tooling (A) .

  1. Use Tooling (B) to install retaining ring (7) .

  1. Install O-ring seal (4) in the groove of the final drive assembly.

  1. Install cover assembly (2), six bolts (1) and the washers. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 105 ± 20 N·m (77 ± 15 lb ft).

  1. Install drain plug (3) .

  1. Fill the axle housing with oil. For the correct procedure, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual for the machine that is being serviced.
