The steering system has two functions. The primary purpose is for steering the machine. The second function of the steering system is used as the charge system.
The steering circuit is composed of four main components:
- Hydraulic oil tank (6) .
- Steering pump (3) .
- Metering pump (2) .
- Left and right steering cylinders (4) .
The steering pump (3) receives oil from the hydraulic oil tank (6) through the strainer (5). Oil from the steering pump flows through the priority valve (1). The oil then continues in two directions.
The primary path for the oil is to the steering metering pump (2). The metering pump has two sections. The sections are the control and the pump. The two sections work together in order to send oil to the steering cylinders (4) .
The secondary flow of oil and the return oil from the metering pump are combined at the brake manifold by way of the oil lines (7). The oil is used for the charge system. The charge system provides the make up oil and the cooling oil for the vibratory system and the propel system.

The hydraulic oil tank (6) provides oil for the steering pump (3). The steering pump is driven by the pump drive on the engine. The steering pump is located under the operator platform.

Oil flows from the steering pump (3) to the metering pump (2). The metering pump is located at the bottom of the steering column just under the instrument panel (8). The metering pump is an open center control unit.
The hydraulic oil tank (6) provides oil for the steering, the propulsion, and the vibratory systems. The hydraulic oil tank is located behind the operator platform.

When the steering wheel is turned, the two double acting steering cylinders (4) receive oil from the metering pump (2), so that the machine can make the desired turn. With the metering pump in the spring centered position, the oil is blocked to the steering cylinders. Oil will flow through the metering pump to the brake manifold. The flow of oil is not dependent on activation of the steering cylinder.

If the hydraulic oil filter (9) becomes plugged, a pressure drop is created across the hydraulic oil filter. When the pressure decreases 350 kPa (51 psi), the filter bypass valve opens and the oil flows through the filter bypass valve to the spring loaded check valve. When the pressure reaches the maximum pressure in the passage between the bypass and the check valve, the spring loaded check valve opens and the oil flows to the hydraulic oil cooler. The spring loaded check valve prevents the brake pressure from decreasing below the minimum pressure.
