The retarder control activates the retarder. The amount of retardation is governed by the retarder control. Use of the retarder slows the machine without the need of continuous service brake application. This reduces brake wear and overheating.
The retarder control is located on the right side of the steering column. The retarder control has four positions.
Position (1) is the DISENGAGED position. Move the retarder control forward in order to put the retarder control in the DISENGAGED position.
Pull the retarder control to position (2) in order to put the retarder control in the MINIMUM position. The MINIMUM position will provide 30 percent retardation.
Pull the retarder control to position (3) in order to put the retarder control in the MEDIUM position. The MEDIUM position will provide 66 percent retardation.
Pull the retarder control to position (4) in order to put the retarder control in the MAXIMUM position. The MAXIMUM position will provide 100 percent retardation.
The retarder indicator will be illuminated when the retarder is engaged.
Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Retarder Control".
Use the retarder to control ground speed. Also, use the retarder to prevent engine overspeed on a downgrade.
The retarder can only be used to slow the machine. The retarder cannot completely stop the machine, and the retarder cannot hold the machine stationary.
