Ef vélin er búin afturhlera, virkar afturhlerinn sjálfkrafa.
Þegar stjórn lyftu er í LYFTA stöðu opnast afturhlerinn þegar lyft er.
Þegar stjórn lyftu er sett í LÆKKA stöðu, lokast afturhlerinn um leið og lækkar.
Færa þarf vélina hægt fram á við þar til að hún er laus við hlassið. LÆKKA staða er þá valin. Þetta kemur í veg fyrir að afturhlerinn hleypi efni inn í pallinn. Jafnframt er komist hjá skemmdum á afturhleranum.
Ef vélin er búin afturhlera, eykst flutningsgeta pallsins og minna af efni fer til spillis. Hlerinn er annað hvort vélrænt stýrður skærahleri eða glussastýrður neðansveifluhleri. Á hinn bóginn verður efnið að renna vel til að komast hjá því að efnið festist við hlerann.
