Problem:
There have been reports that alternator drive belts are coming off or flipping over (rolling over) on these machines during operation. Investigation indicates that the problem could be the result of belt excitation caused by excessive movement of the alternator on the alternator mounting bracket.
Solution:
As an interim fix, it has been determined that the loss of the belts and belt flipping can be improved or corrected by changing the alternator mounting strap. Change from a 115-4810 Alternator Mounting Strap to a 170-3310 Alternator Mounting Strap. The new alternator mounting strap provides additional support to the alternator and eliminates the movement that causes belt excitation. The following is a list of parts required and instruction for replacing the alternator mounting strap.
Parts Required:
Alternator Mounting Strap Replacement Instructions:
- 1. Remove the (1/2 in) 8C-4436 Strap Mounting Bolt and 5P-1076 Washer that fasten the 115-4810 Alternator Mounting Strap to the alternator. Retain the bolt and washer for reuse.
- 2. Remove the (M10) 8T-4136 Strap Mounting Bolt and 8T-4121 Washer that fasten the 115-4810 Alternator Mounting Strap to the alternator mounting bracket. Discard the 115-4810 Alternator Mounting Strap and 8T-4136 Bolt. Retain the 8T-4121 Washer for reuse.
- 3. Install the 170-3310 Alternator Mounting Strap. Use the 8C-4436 Strap Mounting Bolt and 5P-1076 Washer (retained from Step 1) to fasten the new alternator mounting strap to the alternator. The new alternator mounting strap mounts to the alternator in the same manner as the original strap. The bolt and washer go through the slotted portion of the strap. Leave the bolt loose for alternator belt adjustment purposes.
- 4. Locate the 109-6968 Upper Radiator Hose Support Assembly which is attached to the 7C-8366 Fan Drive Mounting Bracket Assembly. Then, as viewed from the rear of the engine, remove the upper left hand 8T-4182 Bolt, two 8T-4121 Washers, and 8T-4133 Nut. Discard the 8T-4182 Bolt. Retain the two 8T-4121 Washers, and 8T-4133 Nut for reuse.
- 5. Attach the mounting hole end of the new 170-3310 Alternator Mounting Strap to the front of the 7C-8366 Fan Drive Mounting Bracket Assembly using the hole where the 8T-4182 Bolt was removed in Step 4. Use one 8T-4185 Bolt, two 8T-4121 Washers, and one 8T-4133 Nut retained from Step 4. Tighten the bolt and nut.
- 6. Loosen the lower alternator mounting bolt on the alternator. Adjust the alternator drive belt tension. Tighten the mounting bolt. Tighten the alternator mounting strap bolt noted in Step 3.
NOTE: If an alternator drive belt comes off or flips after the installation of the new 170-3310 Alternator Mounting Strap, please contact Caterpillar and report the problem.
