Description of Change:

Reference: CBAB1003 "Battery Activation Instructions"

Certain Off-Highway Trucks will ship with dry batteries and will require activation on delivery. Refer to CBAB1003 "Battery Activation Instructions" or use the following procedure.

Activation Instructions

NOTE: Each filler opening is sealed with a REUSABLE plug. DO NOT remove this plug until you are ready to fill the battery with electrolyte. Only when you are ready to fill the battery, remove and SAVE filler plugs. Install the filler plugs after filling with electrolyte and tighten each filler plug to a torque of 3.4 ± 1.1 N·m (30 ± 10 lb in). This is a Maintenance Free Battery and the filler plugs do not need to be removed for the electrolyte level maintenance inspection.

1. Fill each cell to proper level with battery-grade sulfuric acid of 1.265 specific gravity. Battery and acid must be at room temperature of 16 - 38°C (60 - 100°F) at time of filling.

2. Apply a load of 1/2 the Cold Cranking Ampere (CCA) rating for 15 seconds.

3. The battery is ready for the use or must be given a "booster" charge based on the following 15-second test voltage readings:

12V Battery Ready for use 9.0 Volts or higher Need Booster Below 9.0 Volts charge

4. If a boost charge is required, the battery is to be charged for 20 minutes at the following rate:

40 amp for 12 Volt Batteries 600-1200 CCA

5. After boost charging, the battery is to be load tested again at 1/2 40 amp for 12 Volt Batteries 600-1200 CCA the Cold Cranking Ampere (CCA) rating for 15 seconds. The battery may be put into service if 15-second voltage is as follows:

12 Volt Battery - 9.0 Volts or higher

If the voltage is lower, the battery is not acceptable for use.

Battery Recycling A battery should always be recycled and never discarded. A used battery must be returned to a battery dealer or to an authorized battery collection recycling facility.

Adaptable To: The change will be effective with 776D (5ER108), 777D (3PR945), 777D HAA (2YW99), 785C (1HW87), 785C HAA (5AZ107), 789C (2BW90), 793C (4GZ94)
