3608 (6MC),
G3606 (3XF),
G3608 (4WF) Engines
Description of Change: A new thicker jacket water side cover is being used in the central structure cover groups on these engines. This new thicker side cover distributes the sealing pressure more evenly over the entire gasket. The additional thickness also makes the joint less susceptible to gasket creep. This new side cover requires the use of 3.0 mm (.12 in) longer bolts which are less susceptible to high cycle fatigue. These changes will help prevent coolant leaks around the covers.
Location of the new 164-9501 Jacket Water Side Covers (1) and 1A-2029 Bolts (2) on the right side of a typical In-Line engine.
Adaptable To: The new 164-9501 Jacket Water Side Cover is a direct replacement for the former 1W-0129 Jacket Water Side Cover in the central structure cover groups on these engines. The former jacket water side cover is canceled. The 1A-2029 Bolt must be used in place of the 0S-1594 Bolt for installing the new 164-9501 Jacket Water Side Covers.
NOTE: The following hardware may be used when an engine cannot be taken out of service to change the cover, as long as the gasket has not been extruded. Replace the 0S-1594 Bolts with that fasten the jacket water side cover to the cylinder block with 13.0 mm (.51 in) longer 0S-1591 Bolts and 13.0 mm (.51 in) thick spacers. The spacers distribute the clamping force over a larger area and allow the use of longer bolts. The longer bolts are less susceptible to high cycle fatigue. Several different 13.0 mm (.51 in) thick spacers are available. Use the one that is most readily available. Some possible 13.0 mm (.51 in) thick spacer part numbers are 5K-1928, 1U-2812, 6W-5458, or 148-7017.
NOTE: If a jacket water side cover is leaking, do not over tighten the bolts. Over tightening will extrude the gasket which may worsen the leaking condition.
