PROBLEM

The bearing preload for the front and/or rear steering articulation hitch needs to be reset on certain CD54 Asphalt Compactors. The existing shimming of the articulation bearing needs to be reset to increase its preload and avoid a failure of the bearing.

Rework the hitch using a shim pack to set the correct preload for the articulation hitch bearing. (Refer to the Service Manual if/as necessary and see the attached rework procedure.)

The bearing preload of the front and/or rear steering articulation hitch needs to be reset on the products listed below. The existing shimming of the articulation bearing needs to be reset to increase its preload and avoid a failure of the bearing. You will not be charged for the service performed.

Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service.

Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated 02Mar2012 when scheduling this service.

Rework of front articulation
1. Put the machine on a flat ground
2. The front and rear drum must be in straight line
3. Remove the bolts and cover (1)
4. Remove the bolts and cover (2)
5. Remove the front steering cylinder - see KENR6010 "Hydraulic Cylinder (steering) ? Remove and install"
6. Use four hydraulic jacks under the frame just to maintain the machine without lifting it

7. Maintain the front drum with four pieces of wood to avoid any steering of the drum

8. Attach a suitable lifting device to the drum support to secure it during the rework

9. Remove the clamps (10)
10. Move harness assemblies (9) and hose assemblies (4) out of the way

11. Remove the bolts and cover (16)

12. Disconnect position sensor (17). Remove the bolts and remove the position sensor (17)
13. Remove the bolts and adapter (18)

14. Remove bolts (19)
15. Use two threaded rods M10 to extract sleeve (20)
16. The existing shim installed under the sleeve will not be reused

17. Remove the grease and install new shim following the list of shim (table 2) on the shaft (21)

18. Install sleeve (20). Apply tool (A) to bolts (19) and install bolts (19)
19. Tighten bolts (19) to a torque of 240 +/- 40 Nm

20. Use tool (B) and install new lip type seal (21) in adapter (18)

21. Install plate (18) and the bolts loosely
22. Apply tool (A) to the bolts and install position sensor (17). Connect sensor (17)

23. Remove the four pieces of wood
24. Lift up the machine with the four hydraulic jacks to have the drum in the air to be able to steer the front drum

25. Use tool (C) in order to check the duty cycle of position sensor (17). Articulate the drum to the clockwise position. Adjust plate (18) until a duty cycle of 20% +/- 4% is achieved
26. Articulate the drum to the counterclockwise position. Adjust plate (18) until a duty cycle of 83% +/- 4% is achieved. Tighten the bolts on plate (18) and remove tool (C)

27. Remove the pipe plug and install Tool (D) in plate (18), as shown. Fill the cavity with tool (E). Remove tool (D) and install the pipe plug.

28. Install cover (16) and the bolts
29. Install hydraulic steering cylinder. See KENR6010 "Hydraulic Cylinder (steering ) ? Remove and install"

30. Reroute hose assemblies (4) and harness assemblies (9)
