Description of Change: A new piston crown assembly is used in the piston and rod group in the above commercial engines. The new piston crown assembly includes new bearings. The "clinch joint" of the new bearing is located in a different position than on the former bearing. When installed, the "clinch joint" in the new bearing will be in a location of lower piston crown stress.
Adaptable To: The new 121-0463 Piston Crown Assembly is a direct replacement for the former 114-0382 Piston Crown Assembly in the 6I-2861 Piston And Rod Group. The former piston crown assembly is canceled.
NOTE: The oil requirements are the same for both the new and former piston crown assemblies, but the oil specifications for North America have changed from API CF-4 to CG-4. Therefore, use a CG-4 oil in North America and use a CF-4 oil outside North America if Caterpillar DEO oil is not used. These oils will help reduce the tendency for carbon build up in the piston ring grooves. Both "CE" and "CD" specification oils are NOT acceptable for use with these pistons.
