Start By:

  1. Remove the turbochargers.

  2. Remove the centrifugal oil filter.

  3. Remove the starting motor.

  4. Remove the flywheel.

  5. Remove the crankshaft rear seal.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


Note: Inspect all O-rings, seals, and gaskets for wear and damage. Replace if necessary.

  1. Drain the coolant from the cooling system into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant - Change".

  2. Use the timing pins to time the engine properly. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Camshaft Timing". Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Finding the Top Center Position for the No. 1 Piston".

  3. Remove all mounting hardware (1).

  4. Disconnect sensor harness (2).

  5. Remove two bolts (3) and two bolts (4) and place harness bracket (5) out of the way.

  6. Repeat steps 3 and 4 on the opposite side.

  7. Remove all mounting hardware (8) and tube assembly (9).

  8. Remove two bolts (6) and manifold assembly (7).

  9. Remove 12 bolts (10) and eight bolts (11).

  10. Attach Tooling (A), Tooling (B), and a suitable lifting device to turbo support (14). Turbo support (14) weighs approximately 270 kg (600 lb).

  11. Remove ten bolts (12) and two bolts (13) and remove turbo support (14). Place on suitable cribbing to avoid damage to mating surfaces.

  12. Remove 12 bolts (15) and cover/ timing pin assembly (16).

  13. Remove nine bolts (17) and cover (18).

  14. Remove nine bolts (19), one bolt (20), and camshaft gear (21).

  15. Remove two bolts (22).

  16. Remove four bolts (23).

  17. Remove bolt (24) and bolt (25).

  18. Gently pull harness assembly (26) out, disconnect receptacle (27), and position out of the way.

  19. Remove two bolts (28), bolt (29), and cover (30).

  20. Remove mounting hardware (31) and sensor (32).

  21. Remove all mounting hardware (33) and position harness assembly (34) out of the way.

  22. Remove nine bolts (35).

  23. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to flywheel housing (38). Flywheel housing (38) weighs approximately 550 kg (1215 lb).

  24. Remove 19 bolts (36) and two bolts (37).

  25. Pull flywheel housing (38) away from the engine.
