Be Sure To Perform The Unit Injector Adjustment At The Initial Valve Lash Adjustment {1290}

Usage:

3406E (1LW, 5DS, 1MM, 2WS) Truck Engines

Be sure to perform the UNIT INJECTOR ADJUSTMENT when the initial valve lash adjustment is performed on 3406E Truck Engines. This recommendation is in accordance with the maintenance interval schedule in the Operation and Maintenance Manual. The correct procedure for adjusting the unit injector is outlined below and is also in the Testing and Adjusting Manual (3406E Truck Engines), SENR5017.

Unit Injector Adjustment

Unit injector rocker arm (1).
Adjustment screw (2).
Locknut (3).
Unit injector (4).

1. Put No. 1 piston at the top center position on the compression stroke. Refer to "Finding Top Center Compression Position For No.1 Piston" in the Testing and Adjusting manual.

2. Make adjustments to the unit injectors on cylinders 3, 5, and 6.

3. Use injector tool (4) to obtain the dimension of 78.0 ± 0.2 mm (3.07 ± .01 inch) measured from the top of the injector lifter to the machined ledge on the injector body.

4. Hold the adjusting screw in the position and tighten the locknut (3) to a torque of 81 ± 10 N·m (60 ± 7 lb ft).

5. Remove the timing bolt and turn the flywheel 360 degrees in the direction of the engine rotation (counterclockwise). This will put No. 1 piston at top center (TC) on the exhaust stroke.

6. Make adjustments to the unit injectors on cylinders 1, 2, and 4. Repeat Steps 3 and 4.

7. Remove the timing bolt from the flywheel when all the unit injector adjustments have been made. Reinstall the timing cover.
