New Valve Lifter Assemblies (Full Body Roller Follower) And New Lifter Guide Springs Used{1209}

Usage:

3306 (63Z, 64Z),
3306C (2AZ, 3KS, 7RJ, 9TL) Truck Engines

Description of Change: A new valve lifter assembly is now used on these truck engines. The full body design reduces lifter contact stresses. The contact stresses of the former hourglass design could result in excessive lifter body wear and lifter noise. The new full body design requires the use of new lifter guide springs.

Adaptable To: The new 161-7299 Valve Lifter Assembly and the new 161-1033 Lifter Guide Spring, when used together, are a direct replacement for the former 2W-7043 Valve Lifter Assembly and 7E-9758 Lifter Guide Spring. The former valve lifter assembly has been canceled. The 7E-9758 Lifter Guide Spring that is used with the former 2W-7043 Valve Lifter Assembly is still available. The new 161-7299 Valve Lifter Assembly and the new 161-1033 Lifter Guide Spring are effective with 3306C (9TL21894-Up) Truck Engines. Because of the design of the new 161-1033 Lifter Guide Spring, both valve lifter assemblies for a cylinder must be replaced when changing from the former 2W-7043 Valve Lifter Assemblies to the new 161-7299 Valve Lifter Assemblies. Two new 161-7299 Valve Lifter Assemblies require only one of the new 161-1033 Lifter Guide Springs for each cylinder.

Use the following procedures and refer to the illustrations in order to remove and install the valve lifter assemblies. Refer to the appropriate Disassembly and Assembly Manual for your engine in order to begin and complete the following procedures.

Removing The 2W-7043 Valve Lifter Assembly And 7E-9758 Lifter Guide Spring

1. Use a hook tool on the guide spring to remove the valve lifter assembly. Rotation of the camshaft may be necessary in order to push the valve lifter assembly part way out of it's bore. Put identification marks on the valve lifter assemblies for installation purposes.

2. Remove the lifter guide spring from the valve lifter assembly.

3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for the remainder of the valve lifter assemblies.

4. Check the diameter of the valve lifter assembly. The diameter of a new valve lifter assembly must be 33.285 ± 0.015 mm (1.3105 ± .0005 inch). The diameter of the bore in the cylinder block for a new valve lifter assembly must be 33.388 ± 0.050 mm (1.3145 ± .0020 inch). The maximum permissible clearance between the valve lifter assembly and the valve lifter bore in the cylinder block must be 0.30 mm (.012 inch).

Installing The 2W-7043 Valve Lifter Assembly And 7E-9758 Lifter Guide Spring, If Reusing These Valve Lifter Assemblies

NOTE: If installing the new 161-7299 Valve Lifter Assembly and the new 161-1033 Lifter Guide Spring, refer to the "Installing The 161-7299 Valve Lifter Assembly and 161-1033 Lifter Guide Spring" portion of this article.

NOTICE

Install a new lifter guide spring on the valve lifter assembly any time the valve lifter assembly is removed from the engine.

1. Install a new 7E-9758 Lifter Guide Spring on the 2W-7043 Valve Lifter Assembly.

2. Generously apply 8T-2998 Lubricant on the valve lifter assembly roller and the valve lifter assembly outer diameter prior to installation. Install valve lifter assembly in the original location in the cylinder block.

3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for the remainder of the valve lifter assemblies.

Removing the new 161-7299 Valve Lifter Assembly And The New 161-1033 Lifter Guide Spring

NOTICE

The new 161-1033 Lifter Guide Spring cannot be removed prior to the removal of both 161-7299 Valve Lifter Assemblies per cylinder.

1. Use a 1U-7262 Magnet or similar strong magnet to remove the valve lifter assembly. Rotation of the camshaft may be necessary in order to push the valve lifter assembly part way out of it's bore to ease removal. Put identification marks on the valve lifter assemblies for installation purposes.

2. Repeat Step 1 for the remainder of the valve lifter assemblies.

3. Remove the lifter guide springs, one per cylinder, using a hook tool.

4. Check the diameter of the valve lifter assembly. The diameter of a new valve lifter assembly must be 33.298 ± 0.012 mm (1.3109 ± .0005 inch).

Installing The 161-7299 Valve Lifter Assembly And 161-1033 Lifter Guide Spring

NOTICE

Install a new lifter guide spring in the cylinder block any time a valve lifter assembly is removed from the engine.

1. Place a new lifter guide spring in the appropriate valve lifter bores of the cylinder block. Press down on the valve lifter guide spring until it snaps into position. ( A long pair of needle nose pliers can facilitate the installation of the lifter guide spring.)

2. Generously apply 8T-2998 Lubricant on the valve lifter assembly roller and the outer diameter of the valve lifter assembly prior to installation. Using a strong magnet tool, install the valve lifter assembly in the original location in the cylinder block.

3. Repeat Step 1 and 2 for the remainder of the valve lifter assemblies.
