Usage:
3406E (5EK, 6TS, 1LW, 5DS) Truck Engines
The service update software flash files are now available on the corporate mailbox for the above truck engines. The FIND system has been updated in order to reflect the new part numbers. The software release date is labeled as "DEC98".
These software enhancements provide the following benefits:
For all 3406E serial numbers:
DEC98 software provides speed/timing system improvements in order to prevent problems from intermittent signals. Whenever a truck comes in with a logged 190-02 diagnostic code without an engine shutdown, this software should be installed, instead of replacing the speed/timing sensor. If the engine has experienced a shutdown with a logged 190-02 diagnostic code, then follow the Electronic Troubleshooting Guide. If the Electronic Troubleshooting Guide indicates the sensor should be replaced, then replace the sensor and also install the DEC98 software update.
A new parameter called "Driver Incentive Enable" set to enable or disable the Driver Incentive feature. When the parameter is set to "disable", the electronic control module (ECM) will disable all incentive features and the parameter will be automatically locked-out. Factory passwords will be required in order to re-enable the feature. All other driver incentive related characteristics must still be programmed by Fleet Information Software (FIS).
The "Theft Deterrent" feature has a new selection called "Auto-Enable" (in addition to "Yes" and "No"). When the "Theft Deterrent" parameter is set to "Auto-Enable" the ECM software simply enables the theft deterrent anytime that the engine is shut-off. This feature requires a 64K Cat ID with 2.0 or newer or a 32K Cat ID with 1.6 or newer. Version 1.6 is expected to be released by the middle of 1999.
The DEC98 files improve the "out of cruise" Vehicle Speed Limit (VSL) overshoot and undershoot governing. This will help to alleviate overshoot and undershoot of the VSL when the driver is throttling out of cruise control.
For 3406E (1LW and 5DS):
The DEC98 files correct the double reward in the driver incentive feature that was in the former FEB98 files. Also introduced with the DEC98 files is the Eaton Top2 Override with cruise switch feature.
For 3406E (5DS):
The DEC98 files introduce availability of two new interlock codes:
Interlock 170 and 171 were released in order to provide the 2300 RPM Top Engine Limiting (TEL) field up rate software for the 600 HP engine equipped with a 159-8542 or 0R-7275 turbo group.
The DEC98 files also correct "white smoke" occurring during 1400-1600 RPM light load operation.
