New Cooling System Vent Line Check Valve Helps Prevent Over Cooling{1370}

Usage:

3406 (8SB, 92U),
3406B (2EK, 3ZJ, 4CK, 4MG, 5KJ, 5YG, 7FB, 7XC, 8TC),
3406C (3ZJ, 4CK, 4MG, 5KJ, 7FB, 8PN),
3406E (1LW, 1MM, 2WS, 4AS, 5DS, 5EK, 6TS) Truck Engines

Description of Change: There is a new method available to help the cooling systems on 3406 Truck Engines perform better in severe winter weather conditions. The use of a cooling system vent line check valve will help to minimize engine over cooling when the ambient temperature drops below -10°C (14.0°F).

Adaptable To: A cooling system vent line check valve can be installed on any 3406 Truck Engine. The check valve is comprised of a 9M-5590 Stainless Steel Ball with or without a special fitting to contain the ball depending on the specific configuration of the engine.

Installation Procedure For The Cooling System Vent Line Check Valve On 3406 Truck Engines That Are Equipped With A Cooling System Vent Line At The Temperature Regulator Housing. This Is Most Commonly Found On Engines Produced After January 1, 1996.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from hot coolant, steam, and alkali.

At operating temperature, engine coolant is hot and under pressure. The radiator and all lines to heaters or the engine contain hot coolant or steam. Any contact can cause severe burns.

Remove cooling system pressure cap slowly to relieve pressure only when engine is stopped and cooling system pressure cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

Do not attempt to tighten hose connections when the coolant is hot, the hose can come off causing burns.

Cooling System Coolant Additive contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes.

-------WARNING!-------

1. Drain the coolant to a level that is below the temperature regulator housing.

2. Remove the cooling system vent line and the 1/4" NPT OEM fitting from temperature regulator housing orifice (1).

3. Ensure that the 9M-5590 Stainless Steel Ball 7.938 mm (.3125 in) cannot go through the 1/4" NPT OEM fitting. If the ball can pass through the fitting, then install a 006-6586 Hose Fitting (1/4" NPT X 3/8" hose barb) or a 5P-7175 Straight Nipple (1/4" NPT X 3/8" hose barb) or an equivalent fitting.

4. Install the 9M-5590 Stainless Steel Ball inside 1/4" NPT Cavity (1) of the temperature regulator housing. At the bottom of the cavity there is a 4.7 mm (.185 in) orifice that will contain the ball.

5. Install the 1/4" NPT OEM fitting or the replacement fitting and the vent line.

6. Refill the cooling system to the proper level, start the engine, and check for leaks.

The 9M-5590 Stainless Steel Ball is now trapped between the temperature regulator housing and the 1/4" NPT fitting to form a check valve.

1. Drain the coolant to a level that is below the top of the cylinder head.

2. Remove the cooling system vent line, the 1/4" NPT OEM fitting, and the NPT X 1/2" NPT reducing bushing from cylinder head orifice (2).

3. Install a 173-3200 reducing bushing (1/2" NPT X 1/4" NPT) into the cylinder head in orifice (1). Note that this bushing has a 4.7 mm (.19 in) orifice at the bottom.

4. Ensure that the 9M-5590 Stainless Steel Ball 7.938 mm (.3125 in) cannot go through the 1/4" NPT OEM fitting. 5. Install the 9M-5590 Stainless Steel Ball inside the 173-3200 Reducing Bushing.

6. Install the 1/4" NPT OEM fitting or the replacement fitting and the vent line.

7. Refill the cooling system to the proper level, start the engine, and check for leaks.

The 9M-5590 Stainless Steel Ball is now trapped inside the 173-3200 Reducing Bushing to form a check valve.
