Correction To Oil Level Gauge (Dipstick) Calibration Procedure {1326}

Usage:

3306C (9TL) Truck Engines

Reference: SEBU6746-03; Operation and Maintenance Manual; 3306C Truck Engine; Maintenance Section; Pages 89 through 91; "Check Calibration At First Oil Change"

In the Operation And Maintenance Manual referenced above, the procedure for calibrating the oil level gauge (dipstick) contains incorrect information regarding the quantities of oil used for calibration. To verify the "ADD" mark and establish the actual "FULL" mark, the correct procedure and oil quantities are as follows:

------ WARNING! ------

Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact the skin.

-------WARNING!-------

NOTICE

The vehicle must be parked on a level surface to perform this maintenance procedure.

1. Operate the engine until normal operating temperature is achieved. Stop the engine. Remove the oil drain plug. Allow the oil to drain for 20 minutes.

2. Remove the used oil filter(s). Install the new oil filter(s). Install the oil drain plug. Tighten the oil drain plug to 70 ± 14 N·m (50 ± 10 lb ft).

3. Pour 30 L (32 qt) of oil into the sump. Allow enough time for the oil to fill the sump. Approximately 20 minutes should be allowed.

4. Ensure the oil level gauge is seated. Check the oil level on the oil level gauge. The oil level should be at the "ADD" mark. If the oil level is not at the existing "ADD" mark, grind off the "ADD" mark and engrave the new "ADD" level, using an engraving pen.

5. Pour 6 L (6 qt) of oil into the sump. Allow enough time for the oil to drain into the sump.

6. Ensure the oil level gauge is seated. Check the oil level on the oil level gauge. The oil level should be at the "FULL" mark. If the oil level is not at the existing "FULL" mark, grind off the "FULL" mark and engrave the new "FULL" level, using an engraving pen.

NOTICE

If equipped with an auxiliary oil filter or system, extra oil must be added when filling the crankcase. Follow the auxiliary oil filter OEM recommendations.

7. Pour an additional 3 L (3 qt) of oil into the sump for a total fill capacity of 39 L (41 qt).

NOTICE

To prevent crankshaft or bearing damage, crank the engine with the fuel OFF in order to fill all of the oil filters BEFORE starting. Do Not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starting motor to cool for two minutes before cranking again.

8. Start the engine. Operate the engine long enough to ensure that the lubrication system [including auxiliary oil filter(s)] is filled. Inspect for oil leaks. Stop the engine and allow enough time for the oil to drain into the sump.

9. Ensure the oil level gauge is seated. Check the oil level on the oil level gauge. If the oil level is not at the calibrated "FULL" mark, fill the sump to the calibrated "FULL" mark. Record the amount of oil added. This additional oil, plus the oil in the sump, is the lubrication system oil capacity, and the amount of oil needed for each subsequent oil change. Record the lubrication system oil capacity for future oil changes.

Be sure to correct this information in the referenced Operation And Maintenance Manual.
