Description Of August 1996 (AUG96) Software Modifications{1902}

Usage:

3176B (9CK),
C-10 (2PN),
C-12 (1YN),
3406E (6TS) Truck Engines

The following is a list of new features and changes for the latest software release on the above truck engines. The software can be identified by release date "AUG96" using a Caterpillar electronic service tool. Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) version 1.5 (or later) or Electronic Control Analyzer Programmer (ECAP) Service Program Module (SPM) NEXG4522, Version 1.9 must be installed in order to use the new customer programmable parameters. A list of the AUG96 FLASH files can be obtained using the Caterpillar FIND system (search document types: FLASH; keywords: 3176B [OR] C-10 [OR] C-12 [OR] 3406E). The AUG96 software is factory installed on truck engines effective with 3176B (9CK32685), C-10 (2PN3461), C-12 (1YN4984), and 3406E (6TS1). No 3406E (5EK) engines were factory built with the AUG96 software. When updating an older engine with AUG96 software, be sure to explain the new features and changes to the customers so that they can make the correct programming selections for their particular operation.

Features

1. Eaton Top 2 Transmission

The Caterpillar Engine Control Module (ECM) operates two solenoids to control the shifting between the top two gears of an Eaton Top 2 transmission. Super 10 speed Eaton transmissions will use this Top 2 feature, which requires the addition of 3 new customer parameters, additional options to three existing parameters, and four additions to the customer parameter lockout list. Each of the customer parameters is lockable and must be locked following programming by the truck Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). In addition, each of the parameters must be correctly programmed for the system to operate correctly.

The three new customer parameters are Top Gear Ratio, Top Gear Minus One Ratio, and Top Gear Minus Two Ratio. The Top Gear Ratio is the highest gear ratio for an Eaton Super 10 Top 2 Transmission, while Top Gear Minus One Ratio identifies the next to highest gear ratio. Lastly, Top Gear Minus Two Ratio identifies the gear ratio for the highest manually controlled gear. For all three parameters, the programmable range is 0.000 to 3.750 in 0.001 increments. The default is 0.000 for all three parameters.

The three existing customer parameters which have also been enhanced are:

A. Transmission Style - Eaton Top 2
Indicates the transmission is an Eaton Top 2 requiring the ECM to operate solenoids to control the shifting of the Top 2 gears of the transmission. Eaton Top 2 transmissions require the transmission style set to Eaton Top 2, Multi-Function Output #2 set to Shift Solenoid, Multi-Function Output #3 set to Lockout Solenoid, and the Top Gear Ratio, Top Gear Minus One Ratio, and Top Gear Minus Two Ratio correctly programmed for the transmission to function properly. If the Transmission Style is set to Eaton Top 2 without the Multi-Function Outputs set correctly, or if the Transmission Gear Ratios are not programmed, a diagnostic code will become active. Multi-Function Output #1 is also required for Eaton Top 2, eliminating its use as a Power Take-Off (PTO) Switch ON Lamp.
B. Multi-Function Output #2 - Shift Solenoid
This option is added to the Multi-Function Output #2, and is required when an Eaton Top 2 transmission is selected. This output will be ON when the transmission is in Top 2, Top Gear, and will be OFF when the transmission is in Top 2, Top Gear Minus One.
C. Multi-Function Output #3 - Lockout Solenoid
This option is added to the Multi-Function Output #3, and is required when an Eaton Top 2 transmission is selected. This output will be OFF when the transmission is in Top 2, Top Gear, and will be ON when the transmission is in Top 2, Top Gear Minus One.

Lastly, the four following parameters will be added to the Customer Parameter Lockout List, and must be locked out if Eaton Top 2 is selected for the Transmission Style:

1. Top Gear Ratio
2. Top Gear Minus One Ratio
3. Top Gear Minus Two Ratio
4. Transmission Style

The following new diagnostic codes are required for Eaton Top 2. Six new fault codes and one new event code are added, which are:

A. A. 26-05 Multi-Function Output #1 Open Circuit (69)
B. 40-05 Multi-Function Output #2 Open Circuit (66)
C C. 51-05 Multi-Function Output #3 Open Circuit (67)
The preceding three fault codes will become active and logged if the ECM detects an open circuit in the corresponding Multi-Function Output circuit.
D. 26-06 Multi-Function Output #1 Short Circuit (69)
E. 40-06 Multi-Function Output #2 Short Circuit (66)
F. 51-06 Multi-Function Output #3 Short Circuit (67)
The preceding three fault codes will become active and logged if the ECM detects a short circuit in the corresponding Multi-Function Output circuit.
G. 191-07 Transmission Not Responding
The preceding event code will become active and logged if the ECM can not engage the desired gear when in Top 2 mode.

For diagnostic codes B-C and E-G above, (if in Top 2 mode when active), the ECM will maintain the current solenoid state until neutral is detected and will then disable the Eaton Top 2 function (manual shifting is still available) until the ECM is repowered.

H. 253-11 Check Transmission Customer Parameters (56)
This diagnostic code will become active if the Transmission Style is programmed to Eaton Top 2 and either the Multi-Function Output #2 or #3 has not been programmed for Eaton Top 2, or if any of the transmission gear ratios have not been programmed. The service tool will indicate the condition causing the fault code below the code description.

The 3176B, C-10, C-12, 3406E Truck Engine Troubleshooting Guide, SENR5582, has been revised to include a new section describing feature operation/function with Procedure PB-25 - Eaton Top 2 Test added. Also, the PTO Application and Installation Special Instruction, SEHS9856, has been updated to address circuit changes when Eaton Top 2 is installed.

2. Engine Retarder Minimum Vehicle Speed Limit Type

The programmable Engine Retarder Minimum Vehicle Speed feature will be expanded with the addition of a new parameter to add a "soft limit" option, as opposed to the previous "hard limit". The "soft limit" option allows the engine retarder to operate above the programmed Engine Retarder Minimum Vehicle Speed Limit (just like "hard limit"), but allows retarder operation to continue below the programmed Engine Retarder Minimum Vehicle Speed Limit. The "soft limit" will not allow the engine retarder to turn on below the Engine Retarder Minimum Vehicle Speed Limit. If the Engine Retarder Minimum Vehicle Speed Limit is programmed to 0 mph, there will be no effect on engine retarder operation.

3. Adjust Air Conditioner (A/C) Pressure Switch Fan-On Time

For OEMs that use the Caterpillar ECM to monitor the status of the A/C pressure switch, the A/C Pressure Switch Fan-On Time has been expanded to 1-600 seconds. The previous range was 30-600 seconds. The A/C Pressure Switch Fan-On Time should continue to be programmed to 0 seconds if the OEM does NOT use the Caterpillar ECM to monitor the status of the A/C pressure switch.

The range of the A/C Pressure Switch Fan-On Time was expanded to accommodate OEMs using A/C system controls to operate the A/C compressor. These controls may already provide a delay for response to the A/C pressure switch. This delay, in combination with the Caterpillar 30 second minimum delay, was leaving the cooling fan ON for too long of a period. This parameter change affects the ECM Multi-Function Output #4 (pin 28), which was formerly the Cooling Fan Driver.

4. Vehicle Speed Tampering

The existing vehicle speed tampering strategy has been improved. If certain conditions are met, an 84-02 Invalid Speed Signal (36) is logged and engine speed is limited by the Vehicle Speed Limit (VSL) Protection parameter. The engine remains limited by VSL Protection for one hour after the code becomes inactive.

5. Ambient Air Temperature Over American Trucking Association (ATA) Data Link

This feature provides the ability to receive the ambient air temperature over the ATA (J1587) data link using an OEM installed sensor, if available, in place of a Cat sensor.

6. Engine Retarder Delay Parameter

A new parameter for engine retarder and auxiliary brake operation provides a programmable delay after basic conditions to turn the retarder ON are met. The customer parameter default is 0 seconds. This parameter has been added to assist shifting of special European transmissions which require an additional delay.

7. PTO Shutdown Timer Service Tool Status Screen Parameter

A PTO shutdown timer service tool status parameter has been added which reflects the progress of the PTO shutdown timer. This parameter will be similar to the current status information provided for the Idle Shutdown feature. In addition, a new 71-14 PTO Shutdown Timer Occurrence (47) diagnostic code is introduced with the AUG96 software.

8. Oil Pressure Display On Electronic Service Tool

Engine oil pressure is now displayed even when engine monitoring is programmed to OFF. This display can be monitored on ECAP, Cat ET, Caterpillar Driver Information Display (CAT ID), or an OEM dash display. This feature was previously displayed only if the engine monitoring option was selected.

9. Multi-Function Output #4

ECM P1/J1 pin 28, formerly dedicated Cooling Fan, will now be Multi-Function Output #4. This output can be programmed to Engine Running Output, Engine Shutdown Output, Auxiliary Brake, or Cooling Fan.

10. Record Last Date/Time Of Customer Parameter Changes

The ECM added this feature with NOV95 software, but there was a problem which caused errors when using Fleet Information Software (FIS). This problem is solved with the AUG96 software.

11. Rating And Interlock Description

When using WinFlash, AUG96 software will display a rating and interlock description window in order to provide the user with data on the flash file selected before flashing takes place.

12. New Dash Display Access Parameter / State Selection

Due to truck engine sales in Europe, the dash display will be modified to operate on a 24V system. Also, since travel between U.S. states is not applicable in Europe, state selection screens will have the option for disabling.

13. Cat ET Download Parameters Including Timing Calibration

Presently, Cat ET can download parameters from one ECM to another. However, replacing an ECM currently requires a timing calibration. With this feature in the AUG96 software, the timing calibration can be transferred directly from the old ECM to the new one, which eliminates the requirement to reperform a timing calibration. However, both the old and the new ECM must have the AUG96 software in order to avoid the timing calibration.

Electrical System Improvements

14. Extended Idle Reset During Cruise Control

A problem involving reset of the extended idle rpm set point during cruise operation has been solved. This error occurs in personality modules/software dated JAN95 through NOV95.

15. Rating Selection

Software prior to the AUG96 release is capable of up to four ratings in a given flash file. If the ECM is programmed with rating #4 and subsequently is reflashed with software containing less than four ratings, the software defaults to the base maps because rating #4 can not be found. Cat ET also will read incorrectly. The AUG96 software will allow a default to rating #1 when flashing is completed if the new module/software does not contain as many ratings as the previous module/software.
