Usage:
3176B (9CK),
C-10 (2PN),
C-12 (1YN),
3406E (6TS) Truck Engines
The following is a list of the new features and changes for the latest software release on the above truck engines. The software can be identified by release date "MAR97" using a Caterpillar electronic service tool. Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) version 1.6 (or later) or Electronic Control Analyzer Programmer (ECAP) Service Program Module (SPM) NEXG4522, version 1.9 (or later) must be installed in order to support the new features. A list of the MAR97 FLASH files can be obtained using the Caterpillar FIND system (search document type: FLASH; keywords: 3176B [OR]C-10 [OR]C-12 [OR]3406E). The MAR97 software is factory installed on truck engines effective with 3176B (9CK32702), C-10 (2PN4298), C-12 (1YN6784), and 3406E (6TS5316). When updating an older engine with MAR97 software, be sure to explain the new features and changes to the customers so that they can make the correct programming selections for their particular operation.
1. Eaton Super 13, Super 18, And Direct Super 10 Top 2
The MAR97 software will support the use of Eaton Super 13, Super 18, and Direct Super 10 Top 2 transmissions with C-12 (1YN) and 3406E (6TS) Engines. For trucks powered by C-10 (2PN) Engines, the MAR97 software supports the use of Eaton Direct Super 10 Top 2 transmissions. The AUG96 software will only support the use of Eaton Super 10 O.D. Top 2 on the above engines.
The Customer Programmable Parameters added or changed for Eaton Top 2 support in the AUG96 software release remain unchanged in the MAR97 release. Refer to the Electronic Troubleshooting Guide (SENR5582-05), Section 2 or the Truck Electronic Application and Installation Guide (LEBT6777) for programming instructions.
2. Wireless Download Compatibility
Programming the Customer Programmable Parameter "ECM Trip Data Transfer" to "YES" (factory password required) enables the ECM to interact with Highway Master and Qualcomm communication systems. With this capability, the customer can remotely CHANGE the Fuel Correction Factor, Custom Data parameters, and Maintenance Indicator parameters. The customer can also remotely EXTRACT Lifetime Totals, Custom Data Reports, Fleet Trip Information, Economy Model, Maintenance Information, and Customer Parameter settings.
FIS Version 3.0 (available 7/97) is required as well as the following for Highway Master and Qualcomm users:
- Highway Master
- Base Software with Cat Integration Feature for the base station, and the Highway Master Remote Unit with J1587 Appendix B Feature
- Qualcomm
- JTRACS Pro Host Software Update for the base station, and the Qualcomm MET upgraded with J1587 Appendix B Feature
- Base Software with Cat Integration Feature for the base station, and the Highway Master Remote Unit with J1587 Appendix B Feature
3. Expanded Vehicle Speed Calibration Range
The minimum value that can be programmed for the Vehicle Speed Calibration parameter is now 4000 pulses per mile (ppm) instead of 14,000 ppm. This change was made to accommodate the use of transmissions with 6 tooth chopper wheels on the output shaft. Transmissions that employ the 6 tooth chopper are used primarily in Europe and Mexico.
1. 3406E Engine Instability At Higher Altitudes
The MAR97 software includes a change that eliminates 3406E engine instability at higher altitudes. This instability was noticed on some engines (primarily higher horsepower) as the truck went from a lower to a higher altitude. The software change, which was incorporated into all of the heavy duty truck software, smoothes the transition from the low altitude to the higher altitude performance parameters embedded in the software.
2. Standard Broadcast (J1587) Improvement
Prior versions of software would not allow the display of active diagnostics to be cleared from certain OEM electronic dashboards after the diagnostic became inactive. This problem was also evident on the Pro-Link service tool. This was caused by the fact that prior versions of software did not cause the proper message to be sent on the data link that would clear the display of the active diagnostic code. This has been corrected with the MAR97 software.
